Event for beginners? Pump vs beg with semis?

So this last reaperball event my newbie wife played mech semi against veteran pumpers. She absolutely loved it. We have brought up to a bunch of people that she played and they are always surprised. When we tell them she was semi while the regulars were pump only, they always seem to say something along the lines of " ohh I'd try it if I could do that".

Now we have plans in the spring of playing some backwoods ball with 5 other couples where the women get semis and the men get pumps. More want to play but I'm out of loaner gear ( didn't think that would ever happen). Has there ever been or could you guys see an event where beginners can play on a team and get to shoot semi, while anyone who has played before is limited to pump only at one of the bigger fields (osg, ag)?

I'm all about getting new people into the sport and it seems like this would open the door for those who want to try it but are deathly afraid because of all the videos and pictures of dummies shooting each other in the back yard at 400fps 30 times. Or the videos of the pros shooting ropes and bunkering people.

what do you think? Could it be done and would enough beginners and pumpers play?

How about just limit paint for the non noobs and you can play any field with or without pumps. I love this idea though!

In theory this sounds like a great idea and it is always good to get new people out if it can be done so they have a good time and aren't overshot which this would accomplish.

In practice though, I find that newbie semi shooters are still no match for experienced pumpers. Where I think the trick lies is to first find a place where the regulars aren't jerks then get regular semi people to use pumps.

I know personally I enjoy playing with new people and tend to coach more and shoot less when newbies are on my team, so maybe not a pump vs semi game but intermixed newbies with semis and experienced with pump would best.

Probably not my most cohesive message, but that's my 2 cents.
"but we all have electros and you guys only have pumps, this wont be fair"

      (chuckling quietly) "we know"

Yeah, I think a theory I had was people who own and play pump are less like aggressive a holes, and more playing for the sport and fun. So that is why I thought pump limits the type of player playing against the newbies.

Agreed too experienced pump players can easily take on newbie semi players, but in my mind the newbies would out number the vets 2 to 1 at least

2 to 1 outnumbered playing pump, starting to speak my language

Wish I was closer to Maine, I can outfit a small army with pumps

I think your best bet is to put together a private game with people you know/trust and just explain what you’re shooting for (pun intended)

You can even invite walk-ons at the field to join your group (just explain what you are doing ahead of time). I’ve done it a few times and have yet to regret it….you’d be surprised at how many people just want to avoid the handful of idiots on the field.

It was nice seeing wives/girlfriends playing with our group at OSG. I think a big part of the success was the general attitude of the people in our group. Most are laid back and there for the fun of it.

My suggestion would be to setup a private pump game and if people want to bring wives/girlfriends/new players in general they can use either pumps or semis. I’d mix them in like it was at Reaperball. It seemed to work out really good that way.

The Expandables have hosted Paintball 101 events similar to this in the past. While we never attracted much more than the typical MCB crowd with a few newer / younger players in tow, good times were had by all,

I always take a pump out when playing with a new group.
I think the key is for them to not get shot up. If they end up winning all the better, but I think playing pump just stops them from getting torn up.

Bad first experiences happen not from losing but from from feeling dominated.

Awesome, I'll let her know that, I think that would make her day...Although, I thought you were on her team all day? Either way, a elimination is an elimination! I have a video of you guys playing a bit. It is nothing good, and I didn't post it because I am very clearly encouraging cheating and telling her to play on....but in case you wanted to see yourself in action a bit: https://photos.app.goo.gl/xnWkUfJiGG5yvBkv7

I think you should split up the teams half newb, half pump. That way there's experience on both sides and better matched games

Or take 1-2 experienced volunteers to play the new player side, limit them to stock class rules. There should be some mix, newer players can wind up stacking up in bunkers or not move all game without some guidance.

Minor spin on this idea, instead of equipment restrictions just have experienced players start the game without paint? Place 10rd tubes throughout the field for them to find/use.
I've played similar style games and it's a super adrenaline rush starting a paintball game without any paint!

I once played this with the Damage Inc guys years ago... guns vs. knives. 10rd tubes placed in center of field. Game starts with a sprint to the center of the field... "knives" are stabbin out the "gun" guys as they try to get paint. Hilarious game!

              1. Give EVERYONE pumps.
              2. Anyone who is new or nearly-new gets hoppers
              3. Anyone who's played a handful of times gets a stick feed
              4. Experienced people handload single shots
              5. Pros must surrender, no guns only swabs.
              6. Profit.

If you're in Maryland or Southern Pennsylvania, check out an Expandable event. Simple DBAD rules are always in effect. (Don't Be A D). Every game is played with fun as the primary goal. Less experienced players and youngsters get the benefit of the other players helping them. no one ever overshoots on purpose. And you will see an array of outdated relics (guns and players) and extremely awesome mods used alongside current equipment.
