JT tac-5 recon, a smart design overlooked by everyone

Ok. I've had a few of these things and I've always thought they were a very intelligent design so, time to write up a review.

As this is an inline blowback I'll be comparing it to the trusty 98c for the most part

So, JT tac 5 recon, there are a few different versions, I've had one with a basically built in stock. It was specific to the body and couldn't be swapped onto say this one.

So let's get into it. First thing, remove the air line going into the marker. No tools needed as it's knurled for grabbing by hand. Also, intelligent design, that screw under it is the valve retaining screw, so if it gets loose you can't lose it as the air fitting prevents it from completely leaving the body.

Next remove the valve retaining screw and velocity screw and what do you know, they are the same screw

Next up, a simple push pin holds all the internals in and they slide out the back with it removed

The back cap, hammer and spring are all one assembly so no parts flying at your face as you remove them. Just like a 98c the linkage arm connects past the power tube to the bolt so everything in the valve comes out at the same time.

Pop the valve assembly out of the power tube and you'll notice something right away, jt knows how to make a valve serviceable! Yes that is indeed a slotted screwdriver front cap

pull that front cap out and the cap doubles as the front seal and valve spring guide

Pretty much everything else in the valve is pretty similar to the tippmann. So let's move on

How do you get the detent out? Here's the jt's party trick. If you have the original feedneck and parts that came with it, you can actually change this marker between center, left and right feed. Super cool.

There are 2 screws that screw in laterally, remove them and the whole breach comes off like this

The mount for the front grip is picatinny and the rail itself can be moved around so if you are running left or right feed you can still have the front grip pointing down.

Look back up to the photo with the breach off, that white piece is the detent. Slide it out and it looks like this

Looks fine, this marker has sat for who knows how long and this detent holds reball still. A little further forward than I would consider ideal but whatever.

These things were designed very intelligently and I wish they were more popular. Working on them is an absolute breeze. JT used more Buna rings than tippmann and I wonder if that's one of the reasons JT in general got a bad rap. Too many people using co2 and blowing out the rings.

A friend had one of these as a kit for a short minute. I really enjoyed the read cocking mechanism. I never tore into it though. Nice write up!

Always thought they were cool and if the came with a single trigger I probably would have picked one up. Never did see one in the wild that actually functions though.

Ah yes the "crap5" as we called them.

The fall that these were released every kid got them from Dicks sporting goods. Maybe 10% of them functioned. I spent the week after Christmas with angry Karen's being mad at me for something they didn't purchase from us. All i could do for them was explain that they could leave it for a day or two and i can give their kid a rental for free.

Easily repaired 30+ in a week. One kid outright ditched the thing at the shop and bought something else.

Also, looking for opinions on the format of how I wrote this up. I've been meaning to do a few write ups on some of the odder markers I get in now and then. What did you like or not like, how can I write these to be more clear? Etc

I was always curious to see a functional underfeeder configuration of this gun, maybe using a Q-loader or warpfeed.

Like flipping the whole breach over?

Hmmm, I doubt it would take too much modification. You would have to clearance for the connecting arm and I'm not sure what would happen with the detent but I don't see any major issues

I tried to rebuild one of these for a buddy at the field years ago. I could never get it to Chrono above 230, even with a 950 output tank, messing with the springs, and trying a freak barrel on it. Was mine a fluke or have you noticed velocity issues on the ones you have rebuilt?

Granted I've only had about 4 or 5 of them through the years but I can't remember having any problems like that.

I'm about to post one for sale if anyone is curious. Good condition with extra parts.

I've always said these were decent inline blowbacks, but I saw a few fields try and use them as rentals. Bad idea. These guns only shoot nicely when well cared for. They like to be clean and lubed. And when they are they shoot great.

They're decent guns, but bad rental guns.
