Powder Coating Mags: What do I Need to Do/Know

I'm thinking about getting a Minimag body and rail powder coated. What prep needs to happen? What areas need to be masked? The rail has some divits that need to be filled (pictured), would JB weld work? Any other general things I should know?

You need to mask off any part where the body/valve and rail touch and on the rail anywhere the sear touches. If you are using my a twist lock barrel keeps the twist lock holes masked.

The filler needs to have a metalic element, it has to hold a charge for the powder to stick.
I picked up the metalic JB Weld but have not tried it out yet with powder coating. Alvin's Chem Metal is what you can purchase from powder supply companies.
A sand blasted surface is best for the powder to adhere to once cured.

So for the body am I just best off to mask entire bottom and the rear interior where the valve sits? What about the powerfeed or down the front?

Do your cleaning and de-greasing first as if you're ready to powdercoat.

With rubber gloves on, apply heat tape down inside the valve end of the body, then trim with a razor blade, if you have the Automag body I would also do the front for the body too, with the Minimag you can probably just leave it, I use to anyway.

For the bottom, apply heat tape with excess past the edges of where the rail sits (I use to use 2" wide heat tape) then sit the body on the rail and install the front screw just tight enough for proper alignment and so it wont move around, then trace the rim of the rail all the way around the body, then pull the excess tape.

On the feedneck, install the elbow you intend to use and mark the depth down the neck where it will sit, I just mark it with the razor blade, remove the elbow and tape that section off, I always taped off inside the feedneck too.

Do a final wipe down with acetone after the taping is done, then hang and apply powder.

Oh yea, tape off the top of the rail where the body sits, the bottom you can powdercoat.

Thanks for the info. I'm having it done at a shop with (I assume) no paintball experience.
