    New Mag Owner Questions

Just craigslisted me my first Mag (Minimag) and was wondering a few things. I would like to ask the experts the following... What lube/oil/grease should I used when rebuilding? Do I need to buy the AGD branded oil? Also, it came with one of those ACI Sub-Zero Expansion Chambers and I kinda like the "OG" aesthetic of the whole setup as is. Will the expansion chamber cause any flow restriction issues with HPA or anything like that? If so, would it make any difference if took all the guts out of the expansion chamber and just made it into a voluminous gas-thru grip?

Gutting the expansion chamber won't hurt anything providing everything stays sealed.

Mags like oil- any paintball gun oil will suffice- but I use Magnalube grease on mine and put a couple drops of oil in the ASA when airing it up. They really aren't picky, and grease means it stays put better so I don't have to tear it down as often (which, of course isn't at all difficult).

I don't think you'd notice much difference with or without the expansion chamber. You could bypass it and run a line from the valve straight to the bottomline.

Ditto on the expansion chamber. A lot of older mags used them because they help with CO2, but if you're using HPA (which you should), then it's basically just a foregrip.

Let me make you something. I build pneumags, auto-response frames, and wooden pill cases.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't the expansion chamber increase the air volume needed to maintain the operating pressure, wasting air when degassing? Probably not that much air but such things trouble me Mags like higher pressures going into the valve, if you've got a 400psi electropopper tank reg to feed it you'll need to swap to a higher pressure spring pack on it preferable around 800psi iirc. Other than that, watch this video it's super old but the tech literally has not changed on the classic valves and there's some really fun stuff at the end about the new fangled 1500psi nitrogen systems and super-fast electric loaders https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaCEpgeXr5c

I love that video so much but I don't exactly know why.

My absolute favorite way to run a mag is going directly from the asa to the valve with one piece of macroline or braided line in a big arc. You can still keep the expansion chamber for looks, but not run air through it. If you want to run air through it and run two hoses (asa to expansion chamber, then vert asa to valve) you can do that too. Gutting the expansion chamber won't hurt the mag at all.

Troubleshooting a mag is easy. Most leaks can be solved with adding oil. If it's still leaking add more oil. Any paintball oil will work. I use extreme rage oil. Pretty sure it's all the same any ways.

Thank you all for the insight!... Also, that video kicked ass! But I wouldn't let my daughter date a young Tom Kaye, not with that mustache.

It was closer to the '70's than it is to the modern day. Bitchin' staches were very much alive then.
