Lvl10 bug (?)

I got my lvl10 in the mail today and figured I'd set it up... so I did the usual stuff - picked an oring, tried a couple different carriers, etc.

The first one I picked was slightly too loose in a 1.5 carrier (and leaked very slightly when aired up) and WAY too tight when I went down a carrier (to a 1.0), so I ended up grabbing a different oring from my old lvl10 kit.

The first oring was fresh from AGD, the one I ended up using was also from AGD but about a year old, which was why I ordered fresh seals from AGD.

Is it common to have to try different orings as well? I always thought you stuck with one oring, just switched carriers as needed until the oring wore out.

Yes... AGD calls 'em quad orings, theoringstore.com calls 'em X-rings.

New o-rings can have a little mold flashing, which leaks or at least changes the drag on the seal. It wears off quick and needs a different carrier. I used to run them over a steel rod with some polishing compound to clean it off. Otherwise, yes I kept the same o-ring between carriers for that reason, as well as the old ring might be worn.

Quads work as described when new. They also seal about 0.025" lower on that bottom lip, so take that into account with the on/off pin.

My quads wore out or got old pretty quick, and the spares I very carefully stored got old and worthless. Compared to the life span of a good urethane ring, I'd rather tune around the urethane.

I feel the same way. I'd rather have a urethane oring that i dont have to change frequently compared to a quad i'd have to source more frequently.

Is this still a problem? I tried putting on o-rings on my level 10 carrier today and it's been very up and down. Either the marker won't fire or the carrier slides right off the level 10 bolt. I know the tolerances are pretty small and by changing carriers you're more or less smushing the o-ring down a bit.

I was having the same problem non stop with two lvl10’s I was trying to tune.

Are you using AGD orings from Sandman at AGD?
The AGD orings are cast and extremely high quality. Only use AGD rings in this location.

I ended up having to go all the way to a 000 carrier to get to the "hold the valve by the bolt and it wont fall off" situation.

I actually switched to the less expensive millable gum urethane 90 durometer o-rings from theoringstore.com the last 5 years or so I shot Mags. I found the cast 90 durometer urethane o-rings from AGD or the oringstore.com are too durable. They take too long to break in. Granted, I never tried the break in method Spider! recommended. Yes, I had to switch out the millable gum o-rings a little more often, but they are much less expensive and seemed to work after just a couple dozen break in shots.

I don't remember the exact math, but I think I could get 3-5 full rebuilds with the minimum quantity buys from theoringstore.com for the price of one AGD kit.
