So I've completed my pistol Mag build this afternoon. So far, it's shooting as well as I would expect an Automag to operate on 12 grams, getting about twenty good shots or so. So, my next question is, can it be made better? I believe de-volumizing the valve would be one possible way to do it, but from what I've read on AO, there's some controversy around that when it comes to the effect it has on paint. I suppose the question then becomes whether or not it's worth the effort.

Yeah, those last few lurk in hoses and such. Check valves help save a little of that between changes.
The problem with devolumizing is that it means you have to raise the chamber pressure. It's pushing your relief valve in the valve piston, as well as being harder on paint.
With a minimag barrel (short and over bored), you're lucky to get a weak shelled ball out without popping it in devolumized mag.
