Weird hole in my valve, What is this?

Hey maggots, I got this automag in an ebay lot and when I took the valve out to rebuild it I saw that the front half of the valve had a hole with a plug in it... I don't thin I've ever seen this before, anyone know why this would be there? valve works great, btw and has a serial in the 17ks.

I'm pretty sure you can just plug the hole and use it without the box.
