    Mecha-Dragon Build

I was originally going to build a pump, but plans changed and now I am building a mechanical System X Dragon. I haven’t done a mech building over 10 years (if not 15). So I’m a bit rusty.

I have built a few Snipers in that timeframe, though and I had this body up and running as pump, having borrowed CCM trigger frame from another gun. My Slice kit has since been moved over onto my Black Magic, replacing my older CCM kit. After this project is down I might have to build another Sniper out of spare parts….

For this mech build I’ve stuck with the original ram and LPR. The Dragon was an e-cocker, so ram and LPR should be able to handle mechanical speeds without issue. For 3-way I’ve gone with an ID 3-way. I have one on my Ressi and really like it. Nice short pull and very easy to adjust.

If you’re not familiar with System X, their LPRs are unique in that they replace the banjo bolt. So the front block is a little more streamlined than standard. you can put the 3-way a different position from a standard one as well. My 3-way runs under the LPR and ram instead of sticking up beside it.

For the frame I’ve gone with an ID Hinge Frame. I really wanted a Nummech hoseless frame but I got tired of waiting. I haven’t shot the frame with air yet, but it’s very light in your hand and the action is very smooth. I’m really looking forward to getting to shoot this frame.

For the internals I had intended on using the stock valve, but after encountering a leak after I disassembled it, so I popped in an ID valve and spring. It was a simple drop-in upgrade and worked immediately with no leaks, which I always nice.

As it stands I am waiting on my timing rod to be able to complete the assemble. The rod was out of stock when I ordered the 3-way (of course) but came back in stock once I had received my order. So along with the timing rod I have Trident bolt and a fancy gun case coming so I can gets the free shipping….

I currently have a Shocktech bolt, which is a very similar design to the ID Trident. Both have the three air passages. I’ll be sure to test out and see what the difference is. I know the trident bolt in my Empire Sniper has good FPS gains over a standard open faced ID bolt, and I expect some increases with Trident bolt over the Shocktech bolt, the question being how much though.

So my next steps are to wait patiently for my order to arrive and look into some custom grips for the ID frame.

I also need to deal with the eye hole and indent in the body from the original eye covers. They were chunky and ugly, so no going back on the gun and the spacing is different that standard eye covers so the nice ones from Autocockerparts don’t fit properly. I am thinking about getting something 3D printed to make it look better.

Very nice build. I liked the fact that the ID RIP frame lets you still hold it and use it "single finger" if you want to as well.

Definitely great feature. Wasn’t sure about the trigger itself until I figured that out!

Very nice. The Dragon I'm building has been a total nightmare, hopefully you fare better.

Please do tell! I got mine from Superman, so I knew it would be set up top notch. There’s a few odd sizing issues with the body where things don’t fit like eye covers and pump kits with lips under the body (ID kits).

Almost every thing that could go wrong has gone wrong. Leaks, issues getting it to chrono, more leaks, etc. A lot of it has to do with using old parts, and a lot of it has to do with poor quality on the body. I have serious tolerance issues with the body and back block, the holes are off by at least an 1/8".

I pretty much have it working now, just need to loctite the ram together. But it has been by far one of the most difficult cockers to get running I've ever worked on.

That’s frustrating! I’ve been lucky, other than the valve leak after I took it all apart the Dragon has been fine. I dropped an ID bottom tube kit in, threw a Slice kit on it and borrowed a CCM frame from another gun, it shot great for an entire day with no issues. Hoping as a mech this are all good as well.

Still waiting for parts. Will likely arrive on Monday… so left with making sure things are ready. I thought I’d show a few pictures of the LPR assembly, for those that aren’t familiar with a System X LPR.

And the cap fits on with grab screws, but there are only certain places the grub screws can fit, so it makes positioning the 3-way a little annoying as it changes depending on high tight the LPR is attached:

You can also see how the front block attaches, around the sizes of the body and not below, like a standard WGP body.

Parts finally arrived. Timing rod installed. Grabbed a new Trident bolt as well. It’s a little tight and there’s a small
section that rubs (System X’s famous tolerances). I threw an air tank on to see if anything leaks or my hoses decide to pop and it was all good.

My scuba tank is under 1k air so this weekend’s goal it to get an air fill and start testing and adjusting.

Timing a cocker is much easier when you’re not running out of air. Got my scuba tank filled so I can fill my tanks to about 2.5k. A little adjusting of the 3-way and we’re full functional now. It’s raining heavily today so need to wait until tomorrow to throw some paint.

Once this project is done I need to time my FBM cocker. It’s nice to get back to something a little more technical than fixing old A5s.

Weather was good so threw on a hopper and flung some paint. Everything was good, the started to stuff the barrel with balls. Switched to a larger bore, same issue. Then realized the gun wasn’t cocking even though the bolt was cycling. And finally noticed the cocking rod came loose.

After screwing in the cocking rod properly everything was back to being happy. Shot nice and smooth. Light trigger pull and tight timing. Let my kids shoot it (4 and 7) an they didn’t even short-stroke it. Need to chrono it and finish getting it dialed in.

Last steps are some grips, eye cover (thinking something 3D printed) and thinking about a custom anodized barrel to finish it off. I have something special in mind but I’ve never had anything anno’d.

I’ll try to get my shooting video posted.

Thanks. Picked this one and a blue one up locally. I'd been getting a kink out of the lowers on the green, so it was the easiest to grab.
