    Underboring/Overboring and accuracy

    Hey all,

This may be a decades old conversation, but I am annoyed by this and want to talk.

Autococker needs slight underboring/perfect paint to barrel matching so the ball does not roll out. I find I have two issues with paint - its either hard, low quality paint with inconsistent sizing; or it is higher quality paint with more consistent sizing but brittle, leading to inevitable barrel breaks that then affects all subsequent accuracy.

One way or another, I end up with pretty imprecise groupings of paint when shooting at a moderate distance. On my modern space guns this is no issue, since I just overbore. How do you guys deal with this with your autocockers? By far my favorite kind of gun, but I genuinely can't seem to get that pristine performance out of it.

Edit: Things I have attempted are barrel kit, and getting it professionally tuned to control for other confounding factors. No luck!

    Teach me! Thanks!

Yeah paint sucks. People have luck with a bigger sized barrel and tape or 3D printed anti rollout detents. I like the TechT iFit kit to stop rollouts, it uses a less than 2" insert and really small sizes are available. You can get away with a lot of compression without breakage.

Slightly overbore with and use a widget.

if someone told you that you would get more accuracy with their tune, then I'm sorry to tell you but you didn't get it professionally tuned.

You might, MIGHT, be and to get a little more consistency and in theory that would turn into your vertical spread being slightly less but A) unless your consistency is really bad to start with it will be minimal at best and B) good luck actually proving that the vertical spread is any better

Might I suggest getting a harder shelled paint, like those for magfed. Defy is pretty consistent and it has a pretty thick shell.
someone was saying using smaller inserts. I don’t remember who, but someone had tested shorter inserts like those from nova and had decent results due to the 3in control bore. I personally use nova inserts and have not had a barrel break with GI 5 star. That being said my favorite all around paint is Valken GFX.

From what most have said on here most seem to run a .684 barrel or close to that and run the 3d printed anti roll out fingers

over bore and use these… no rollouts and you can get better consistency with less consistent paint.

Paint today is not consistent enough for an underbore. Even “good” premium paint is all over the place. I do seem to get away with not needing them with a .681 most of the time but I keep a detent ring in the tool box at all times. I buy a bunch and hand them out to anyone that runs into rollout issues.

Made some for myself, ended up with a lot of extra. laser cut Mylar, approx .010” thick. Maybe similar to the freedummy detents? But made of a continuous piece, constant thickness. Wedged between AC body and barrel. I find they really shine when slightly over bored with bad paint. If you have oval paintballs, under boring

My SO has a Cricut machine, gonna play around with a similar design and see what I get. Will post a thread when and if I get around to it. I like the general idea of the design, because it should work with anything that has an unscrewable barrel.

They are laser cut not printed that’s what makes them so durable. You couldn’t print something that thin and make it durable.

There was a guy making phantom ones that fit over the lil lip that had much smaller flexible detents that worked well. I believe it was made from two different materials. People have tried to replicate them but haven’t been all that successful. The “Freedummy detents”.

I vaguely remember watching a youtube video where a team had a sifter. May have been custom, about a hundred hole ball sizer. Each metal plate was one size, and they would start with the biggest to smallest. I'll look around for it and update if I find it.

I used to swear by underboring, but with inconsistent paint quality and size it becomes an exercise in frustration. These days I will only underbore if I need the FPS boost, otherwise I run a medium bore (.682-.685) with wedgits or dummy detents.

Since most of us are at the mercy of field paint one is better off going with something that will be gentle and consistent rather than perfect.

Same I use to paint match and swear by it. But today’s paint just isn’t consistent enough. You will get 4-5 roll through then one that won’t fit down the bore. With brittle paint it’s just asking for a break. With the overbore and detent ring you can get a much more consistent shot at the cost of efficiency. For me the trade off it worth it because I would rather loose shot count then take the chances of a barrel break. With a tight bore match and a barrel break forget about accuracy sometimes you can’t even get a ball out of the barrel after a break. Sure you can carry a squeegee. But with an over bore and Detent ring you shouldn’t even need one. Unless you dump a bad pod in your hopper. I rarely get barrel breaks. Most of the time if I do it’s due to clipping. Anything with functional Detents I just let them do their job. It’s always worked very well for me. Especially in the tournament setting. I want reliability over all. When asked what bore to use always tell teammates overbore a lil and let the detents do their job. With the cocker I use the detent barrel ring because the detents don’t do anything after a ball is Chambered. With the Phantom ASP detents let me shoot the ultra brittle stuff with a slight over bore for consistency. All the modern electros and mech have functional detents. They need to today. I do insure they are in good working order.

Most places at FPO not many BYOP fields / Events left in the industry so we need to work with what we got for the day. Definitely grab some of those detent rings I posted they have been a lifesaver for bad paint days. They last forever are cheap as dirt and they are great and work on a bunch of different markers. I used one on my VM68 and Prolight until I got the proper parts to fix them. I have handed them out to spider users to stop rollouts on 698 barrels. They last as long as you don’t lose them when you take your barrel off.

I still underbore… as long as I don’t mess the trigger pull up I dont seem to have many issues. I tune my guns a little tight and make sure there is no blowback to try an eliminate as many of those issues as I can. I just carry a lot of inserts. I like the freak xl inserts, and one of the guys on here occasionally has .670 brass inserts up for sale. Freak xl seems to be the Truist to size in my experience, more than pwr (PE ones are accurate), acculock, nova… etc. I also do have a larger bore that I can throw in just in case nothing will work. I’ve been able to make it work most of the time tho. Sometimes it does feel like an exercise in futility tho.
