Promaster Ram Shaft Removal?

I don't actually need to do it now, but how do you guys take apart your Ram without marring the shaft?

I've heard a sheet of rubber works. Any other ways?

I used brass strips on the shaft and hammer, with vise grips and heat (~500F). Adjust the vise grips or vise carefully. Polish the shaft before putting it back if you can.
