Use Combo On/Off & Reg just as an ASA?

I'm in the process of rebuilding a Spyder VS3 and I am going to put 'traditional' reg on it using the CP Reg adapter. I was wondering if I could 'disable' the stock combo on-off/reg and just use it for its on/off capabilities. Any idea which parts to remove to make that happen?

I would assume you can just put a plug in #SCR012 (velocity adjustor) to seal it and let the air run at "full pressure". I believe the biggest problem with these was that the act of using as an on/off was what wrecked the o-rings and made it leak. For my VS2, had it set up as the regulator but would never turn it off.

Do you like the stock ASA, or just lack a different one?

That’s a fair question. I actually just bought a CP on/off for it, but then I realized it would also match another gun I have that also needs an on/off.

So I was kinda just being cheap about it.

i would imagine everything in front of the the reg would be removed. and yeah, the on/off function is horrible on these.
i think the problem is that the knob and the valve pin are perpendicular to each other.

its not as bad as the older mini regs but still pretty bad. with air though, you dont have to remove the tank to fill it. so if you get it working without leaking, just leave it in the "on" position.

You could also just crank the bottomline reg so it's not exactly regulating down, but acting as a pass through

I don't think they degas? Recommend getting a better on/off asa.

That seals the deal for me. I haven’t heard a single positive thing about the reg/asa. I’ll stick with the CP one I picked up. Stay tuned for a post detailing the build, tuning, and shooting.

its worth it if its a wall hanger and you want it all original...

i used to play with a vs2 and some times the asa worked and you'd forget about it and other days you're struggling with it, missing a game, and ultimately going to your spare marker.

one day i was completely done with it and was about to just remove the damn thing until i realized its also the reg' and i couldn't just direct mount the tank.

my angel A1 fly and BL G6r never had a single issue...

you could look for a spyder rs/rsx and take that setup. (this is what i did).
it has a separate reg' and separate ASA. and the ASA is a more traditional setup.

How trash are these regs If i wanted a reg/asa combo for another marker?

Like unusable or problematic at best 50% of the time. They are actually trash as a regulator.

Thanks to all the advice above, here's what came of the VS3 I picked up:

• Stock internals
• Tadao board
• CP vertical reg adapter (went with dust silver, but gloss black may have been the better choice)
• Planet Eclipse inline reg (can't remember the name)
• Dust black 2k5 CP on/off (dovetails nicely into the stock frame!)
• Yellow color kit I (snagged on eBay for $10 shipped!)

Haven't chrono'd it yet, but it is currently running at 200psi.

First off, it turned out great! The yellow and black is slick.

Secondly, that's a great video of the rocking trigger in action. Nice to see that.

Thirdly, I agree that a black reg adapter would look better. But it's such a little thing to worry about.

Lastly, 200psi is a perfect pressure for these. I imagine it's got very little kick. It sounds good too.
