    N3 Field Day Notes

I thought I'd post up some of my thoughts and mental notes after playing a full recball game with my new N3. Stock configuration, no changes or tweaks (pressure was dead on 160 out of the box).

-Overall performance rocks. I'm not one to sling loads of paint, especially in recball, but when I needed fast bursts the N3 didn't let me down. Never felt outgunned even in a couple of intense firefights. Not one single chopped ball or double feed (caveat below).

-I had a couple of early double feeds that were somewhat confusing. Given the way the detent works I figured double feeding an N3 was basically impossible, at least via the usual method of a ball rolling past the detent. Turns out it was my own fault. Early on, I would show interested parties how the barrel reciprocated back to the breech. And of course, that stuffed the paintball into the mouth of the insert, at which point another ball would fall into the breech. Lesson learned!

-Handling the N3 at home I wasn't a fan of the loose trigger. At the field, I never noticed or even thought about it. It's so light and easy that a reset spring would detract from my enjoyment, I think.

-Air would leak from behind the trigger once in a while. Typically it'd clear up by pulling the trigger once or twice. I'm not certain what was going on there. It's something I need to try replicating in a controlled environment.

-I wish I could comment on the shot consistency but paint diameter was all over the place. I ran a handful through my sizer and got a sample range 0.674 to 0.686.

-My hopper was a V-Mech. Winding it puts occasional torque on the feedneck. Twice I thought the clamp had loosened (I couldn't actually see it due to the team color bandana around my feedneck). Instead, the feedneck itself was actually unscrewing from the body. I cranked it down by hand and it held for the second half of the day. Still, the clamp is off center now. Might re-center and throw some blue loctite on it.

-The N3 got more "what the heck is that?" attention than any other marker I've used. Two separate people asked how old it was, and seemed pretty shocked when I said 6 months. Great excuse to chat about Nova and the N1/N3. Really positive feedback, especially from the couple of people who shot it.

Can't wait to bring it out to play again!

I keep going back and forth on getting one of these, this type of info helps, thanks!

How heavy is it? I don't like really heavy guns. I don't have access to one to hold it and test but knowing what it weighs would help. Do you think the air leak is some sort of short stroke issue? It would make sense that it stops again when you shoot another shot.

I don't have a suitable scale handy but this is a good excuse to buy one. :-) It feels heavier than my Etha 3M although not by a lot. Nowhere near my Empire Resurrection. I'll order a kitchen scale and report back.

The trigger is so short already that I'm not sure how one could fail to move it far enough. Maybe my finger is catching the side of the trigger occasionally? Tapping it just enough to drain? I'm not sure.

I'm good with the comparison on the weight.

I also keep wanting one of these, but it sounds like they still haven’t fixed the leak issues from factory…

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, please.
I appreciate that they quickly put out a video for people to fix it at home, but I’d hope the newest purchases are having the problems rectified before shipping.

If it's a tolerance issue, then maybe sizing up an o'ring in the trigger pin could help. That or a little Dow-55 to make them swell. Your finger is the actuator, so sticking shouldn't be an issue, but it may have a stiffer pull.

So the leaking from the trigger is most likely due to you have your finger on the trigger and providing just too much force. This is the nature of it being a pneumatic trigger and a very light one at that. I am used to my pump markers that have pure mechanical triggers and I am used to having my finger on the trigger with a little bit of pressure on it in anticipation of snap shots. The first day out with my N3 I had a fair amount of hissing intermittently and occasional unintentional discharges. Once I learned to keep my finger off the trigger and along the side of the frame when not actively shooting these issues stopped.

After testing the marker tonight, I was surprised to notice that I could press the trigger enough to leak air without firing the marker. And I usually run pump or mechs with a heavier trigger. So I'd say your theory explains some of my observations.

That said, I still occasionally heard air leaking from behind the trigger after firing the marker. Not consistently or frequently, just here and there. It continued with my finger totally off the trigger and only stopped after firing another 1-2 shots. I also checked out the video that Riot mentioned ("N3 Trigger Repair"). The offending spring in the video had already been removed from my trigger assembly. So I'll get in touch with the Nova crew and find out if they have any suggestions.

There is a leak that can happen after use due to debris on a seal. TJ from Nova took care of this for me (bought this during Fulda Gap) while I went and played with another marker so not sure which seal had the trash on it. Apaches is TJ from Nova Paintball and might be the best person to answer this question.

Some minor followup info in case anyone is interested.

-Upon examination, the clamp portion of the feedneck is held in place by another allen screw. After loosening this I easily re-centered the clamp.

-Weight comparison on my kitchen scale:
Etha 3M with stock barrel = 31.9 ounces
Nova N3 with stock barrel and insert = 35.6 ounces
Empire Resurrection with Inception 2-piece barrel = 39.3 ounces

Currently there is a bit of a problem in the paintball world with air, a lot of fields just don't have enough dryers or filters with there compressors and it causes problems with both tanks and markers. We just recently returned from ION and was a great event, but then again the guys working the tents doing repairs on tanks had there hands full. We were set up across from several vendors doing tank repairs and at some points they had 20+ people waiting in line to have their tank regulators either cleaned out or rebuilt pretty much the entire weekend. We've seen this at a lot of events lately and when the tanks can't stop all of the trash and condensation from coming back out of the tanks into the markers you get this problem with not just our markers but a lot of markers leaking. On the N3 you have to remove the trigger assembly and clean off the poppets in the assembly and clean any trash off of the dog bone. This is a current issue that we cant engineer out, just requires a little maitience. If anyone has an issue please always feel free to contact me and we will get you back working.

Yeah that was the advice I got from you folks via email too. It seems to have worked after a "nitrile gloves and bore patches" level of cleaning to wipe down the tiny components. I haven't made it back out to the field for a full day test yet.
