So to mount this thing, I eyeballed it and taped it in place with a piece of scotch tape. Then I cracked a 12ie and sent some paint down range. Luckily my eye ball was on the money.
I carefully peeled one side of the tape, drew a line down the side of the sight with a sharpie. Replaced that tape, and followed suit for the other side. With both sides drawn I removed the tape, fluxed and then soldered the sight bottom. Next I brushed flux between those sharpie lines and mounted the sight on top, cinching it in place with that same worm gear clamp from before after removing the frame and guts.
with the body wrapped and held in a vise I heated the sight and rear barrel with the torch until the solder melted. Heating directly like this makes a little bit of a mess compared to radiant heat, but I didn’t want to risk popping the barrel and lower tube apart at the quickstrip slot. A 10 minute cleanup with a diamond grit needle file from harbor freight and 5 more minutes of wet dry sand paper, we’re good to go.
overall a great success with no need to shorten the rear sight posts. Guess I got lucky. I cracked another 12 gram after soldering. I Aim with both eyes open and the pgp at arms length. By viewing the target through the rear bolt face and aligning the top of the front sight with the center and top of the rear, I was able to consistently hit the broad side of a 2x4.
