    Sheridan efficiency

Ok so having owned a Palmer super stocker, and having it get 30-40 useful shots from a 12 gram spoiled me. My P68SC only gets a full 15rd mag of semi useful shots at around 240 fps. I just rebuilt it with the Palmer kit do it has the new valve as well as both new springs. As it’s a cartridge valve it seems that there is a lot of wasted space inside just for volume. I remember a quick fox on the phantom vcs was to put something in the back of the valve to take up space. Is there anything like this for the carriage valve guns? I would like to be able to get at least 30 useable shots off of it. I don’t think that is asking too much.

There are all sorts of devolumizing mods you can do for older brass, I'm pretty sure they generally just boil down to "putting stuff in the air chamber". I'm sure a more experienced person can give you a push in the right direction. I too have been spoiled by the efficiency of PPS so when I get the abysmal shot count of OG brass it hurts extra.

Extending teh transfer port between the tubes is going to be the most improvement you get. then is plugging teh extras valve ports.
15 rounds per 12g is pretty standard foe a stock sheridan.

On stock cart valves, the air port in the valve body is smaller than the transfer port between the tubes. Drilling this out to the same size helps. New palmers springs may not be the tune you are looking for. Most of my sheridans have required myriad spring swaps to find the right combination of pierce depth, spring strength and shot count. Some of my valves have modified random springs from the parts bin that happened to fit the bill. It’s a mad science really. Wedgits or nail polish detents also help with consistency, making sure every shot is pushing from the same place in the barrel. Definitely check your pierce depth, as pins that hog too far into your 12grams will lower your shot count.

          This.

My quest for efficiency with my KP has also led me down this rabbit hole. I'm currently at around 3 shots per gram, so a chock-full 12gram gets me roughly 35-38 usable shots above 260fps.

There doesn't seem to be a 100% set-in-stone combo, unlike Cockers.

So I should drill out that hole on top of the tube? I was wondering about that. What size drill bit should I use?

Drilling the tube itself is a whole different beast. I recommend drilling the air port on the rear cartridge body itself. Remove your bolt, stick in your finger and smoosh it against the transfer port. Match the size of the indent on your meaty digit to a drill bit. Take the valve apart, remove the pin and enlarge that rear air passage with the drill bit

Also worth mentioning is making sure the air port on your valve body is properly aligned with the transfer port. If they don’t match perfectly it will definitely rob your shot count
