Custom pgp pump handle-slow progress and learning

So I ordered this 2*2*12 turning block of rosewood only to find it doesn't match my pgp's grips too well so I'm calling this a practice run. That being said I was pretty happy with the result of the brass pump rods, they accepted threads easy enough, bent where I wanted them to after quick torching, and making the indent for the bolt's locking screw went well enough with the grinder.

The bad part is that I managed to crack the wood when putting the ez-lok threaded insert into it. I mostly attribute this to how thin the wall between the insert and the cut out in the pump handle is.

Thus, when I make the new pump handle I'm going to make a rod with a longer portion after the 90* bend so that a beefier handle with more meat to put the threads into can be made but still reach the bolt.

Obviously I'll be doing some extra shaping for the final product, which at this rate may just be a piece of boring wood that I stain to match, but we will see.

I'm mostly just sharing for fun, but I always appreciate advice and input. Hopefully my explanations make some sense, but I've never been good at explaining my thoughts and ideas in text.

Depending on how hard you are with your pumps and the kind of wood, you can get away with a variety of thread methods.

With what you have, a little epoxy could probably back it up fine. I have some handles that are threaded in the wood (hard wood). I have one that was a smooth hole but filled with JB weld, and I left a waxed #10 screw in it to set up, creating threads. Inserts work too obviously.

Don't junk a handle just for a wimpy thread.

I was debating tapping directly into it, but I do like the brass inserts, and I've got 5 more to mess around with for now.

And I'll definitely be keeping it as a backup, and likely for a bit more practice, the cuts could definitely be better, this was sort of a proof of concept/dry run. Once I've got my pgp back in my hands it will be easier to test fit it and see what other adjustments I may need to make.

I do like your idea with the screw and epoxy though, that's pretty neat!
