Best way to mech an Ion (SP1)

So I'm looking at buying a lot with several SP1s and I'm assuming the solenoids are all toast. What's the best way to mech one of these that's cheap, easy and reliable? GOG parts? SSC, ordering individual parts?

SSC is by far the easiest. Send in your old bolts, and maybe your grip frames if you need help with the SMAV-3 mount. He has whole kits, or you can buy the parts individually from Clippard for a little cheaper. Either way I would send him the bolts.

Just had a look at his site. Doesn't look like he makes any kits for an SP1. Would an enmey valve and trigger added to the SP1 work?

I’m currently playing with an SP1 mech build. The biggest catch is you need a bolt with dual tail o-rings. So Myrkul ‘s suggestion is best.

Jordan is a good person to touch base with. He helped me in getting the parts I needed.

I’ve got everything plumbed but need to figure out the SMAV mount.

ChoSanJuan has a stl file of a smav mount for ions he designed on thingeverse. If you can print the mount, thats the biggest part IMO. I printed like 10 off making some for Jordan, so i am willing to ship ya one or 2, but no promises they are amazingly strong prints. I assume they are the same from frame to frame.

Stanchy will dual tail your bolt for cheap, I wanna he said like 5 bucks a bolt last we talked. He has a jig set up so he simply loads your bolt and cuts the o ring grove in a few minutes.

Front fitting HAS to be a qev. You need it to get a good shot velocity.

from there its tubing and fittings.

I believe you can follow the "so you wanna build a mech ion" thread ChoSanJuan has going, with a few subtle differences to an sp1.

SP1 mounts are different and not the same as Ion mounts, they have different frames internally. It's not hard to make a mount using a bit of aluminum flat stock if you're creative.

I have a leaky one laying around I was gonna mech, bit i really have grown to enjoy the ions so much I havent touched it.

Your ion version with the wings to utilize the board slots is beautiful. I would happily send ya mine if it means more open source paintball mod parts out there. I can meet up with ya at a big game in spring to hand it over, and or ship it to ya now. Then Ill just have to meet ya at a big game for return. Or if you are in love with it after the fact, we could talk.

If they're non-functional, $50 apiece? I'd be interested in a pair of them, I want to build my own SP2.

Pretty sure he meant mech swapped, functioning markers. I'm not sure how much of a market there is for them. Sure they are going to be fun, but these weren't super popular when they were new. You can't really ask much over $200 when you can buy an Emek which will be more reliable and consistent, and still supported by aftermarket and oem replacement parts.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll hold off for the time being. I can't really justify buying these and have more stuff sit around. Might come back to it if you come up with an SP1 mount for the smav and just rebuild them and sell so others can make their own conversions.

That’s helpful for me. Still figuring out how to mount the SMAV-3. I have pretty much the same hose layout, just that darn mount.

You usually just kinda wedge it in the frame on Ions, using the set screws to push the mount tight. I'm not sure how your trigger frame looks inside. Pictures?

I personally never liked the smav. It doesn't meet my trigger pull standards. Clippard makes a piston that screws on and then I use an MSV-2 to activate the smav piston. Gives you a glorious 20bps mech.

I personally like to find aluminum grips or back my current grips with sheet steel and then use pins that go from grip to grip to hold all the valves where they belong. I use macroline around the pins to act as spacers if I need to keep stuff from sliding back and forth.

I dislike using the MSV as they vent continously if you hold the trigger back.

I've been toying with a few designs for a trigger mechanism to make the trigger pull more consistent. I really suck with computers so it's a bunch of drawings at the moment. I've also been trying to find a pneumatic solution but it's hard to find the proper parts to make it work.

Also why do you need 20bps? Some fields allow 15, most of them like 12.5 though.

Here’s the frame of an SP1. They annoyingly use essentially a very long nut for the grip frame screws, so it is solid between the grip holes. Looks like best option would be to find a normal nut that size or cut this as it’s the ideal spot for the SMAV.

I ended up mounting the SMAV on top of the large nut that holds the grip frame screws. The SMAV sits and an angle and has good contact with the trigger and should be enough room for the hoses. I'll update with a picture of the horrors I committed to mount the SMAV once I confirm it works.

It’s alive! Finished fixing the hosing on my SP1 and closed it all up and everything is working. Pretty easy to do. Though my QEV seems to squeak.
