I've had this on the backburner for years.
Ghostflanker's MFG stoked the fires several years ago when he started up his conversions... I'd already done some mech Ion builds using Mag parts and I figured there'd be overlap there somewhere, so I shot him a message asking for more details (if he was willing) and got a ton of information off him.
That was back in 2020. π
JeeperCreeper's SP8 build got me thinking about tackling it again, so I got out my Ion and Mag parts bins and started mocking it up... and realized it would work, just not the way Ghostflanker did his conversions. The breech on a Mag is much longer than an Ion, and there wouldn't be anywhere to attach the DAM magwell I wanted to use.
A quick measurement and a search on onlinemetals.com later, I found some thinwall brass tubing that I could slide an Ion body into... so I bought some of that, along with a couple other bits and pieces, and waited patiently for it to arrive.
Cut to this weekend... had some nice balmy 0Β° weather (that's 32 freedom units for the 'Muricans reading this) so I could work in my shop without losing any fingertips.
Got most of the body hotwork smashed out - there'll be a full length rail running along the top to cover up the QEV and mounting screw, which will also serve as a mounting spot for some Picatinny rails - and I'm going to be doing some other mods to the frame to go pseudo gas-through.
I still need to plumb everything, which means more measuring and drilling, and I'm waiting on a few other parts yet... I pulled a few things off other projects to mock this one up. I'll update the thread as it progresses.
