My last post started as a question but ended up showing my process to recreating the SMG68 magazine. While I was working on that, I was also trying to figure out a way to get the valve to reliably work on HPA.
I started with trying to increase the space inside of the valve. I got a hexagonal piece of brass, a stainless steel rod, and a few rubber seals from an A5 valve that I used to make smaller versions of the poppets that come with the SMG valve.
I found some video of BretG showing off some of his modified valves so I tried to replicate that as much as possible, but I couldn't quite work his magic on it. I slightly rounded the corners then added fluting around all faces on the front poppet, and fluted two opposite faces on the rear poppet. When put back together the valve held air and cycled, but the paintball wouldn't even register on the chrono. Tank was outputting about 800 psi.
I tried completely removing three of the corners from the front poppet to get as much air flow forwards as possible. I should mention I was also trying different springs inside the valve, and at this point I was using a very light one. Put it back together and it held air and cycled at 800 psi HPA, but shot barely any further than before.
Tried it on a CO2 bottle and it jumped all the way up to 250 fps consistently on the chrono: https://photos.app.goo.gl/4GRyUJcUELn9YHXN7
I also tried an HPA bottle with a Ninja SHP reg with all three additional shims. This was the only time shots on HPA registered on the chrono, but still only at 140 fps.
I am now at a loss as to how I move forward. Any suggestions? Only thing I thought of is swapping out the bolt spring with a slightly less worn one from a 68 Special I have laying around.
