No one said barrels yet. So yeah, barrels. So many gullible people with money to burn in this sport. Like golf, when you’ve never taken lessons and play with driving range balls but buy new clubs to up your game. Sure, that’s how physics works.

OMG if I hear one more person proclaiming the virtues of the strapless pack like its a game changer I'm gonna lose it lol. Never before have so many pods been lost while sliding to the corner and having them open up. Or falling out while running. I truly despise these packs.
That and joggers which I've made a point of saying in the past.

It's hilarious how many people believe themselves to be playing at a level where the 1/8th second it takes to open a strap somehow makes a difference in outcomes.
Of course, that's 99% of paintball gear marketing anyway, isn't it? Trying to sell some tiny, incremental improvement as THE thing that will stop holding you back and take your game to the next level. When the reality is that it doesn't take much performance from the gear for the person to still be the deciding factor.
-
Every top-level competitor I've ever seen in any sport could be at a similar level with entry level equipment. Paintball, cycling, mountain biking, tennis, basketball, baseball, autocross... you name it. Incremental improvements are consolation prizes for having plateaued, but that doesn't stop us from getting that endorphin rush. And paying for them supports entire industries.

Phantoms are super overrated; I think they're the ions of pumps. Doesn't matter what you do to it, it still isn't anything special. My Feedback

What are you upgrading on a phantom or M98? Ion, sure - QEV, board, bolt kit, regulator, trigger. Everything else is common among all guns; barrel, grips, and feed. Phantom has some alternative form factors, like VSC or back bottle, but those are lateral moves that change the form factor rather than an upgrade. Only unique 'upgrades' I can think of are detents. Maybe I'm having a brain fart here...
-
I think that the more you use a phantom, the more you realize how good they are. I think other modern nelsons like traccers are great and they even have some good features, but the total lack of support and lacking quality in various areas puts them below the phantom. If you want the support and the versatility the phantom is the way to go. It really speaks well for the nelson platform, good nelsons are such great guns its ridiculous. Like a 100 dollar apex elite has the best pump stroke of any non regulated gun that I've ever used. The barrel needs to be removed and threaded, and the gun needs to be modernized in many ways but that thing is from like 1993 or whatever and it just rules.
But the phantom is available now and has excellent features and lacks very little. They work great and don't need to be money sinks.
I used to be anti-model 98 too, but after many many years with my piranha and other stacked tube blowbacks, I finally gave the tippmann guns an honest shot and for a co2 powered gun that is unregulated, the gun just works better and more consistently. So for a blowback I like them better.
But I like most gear now that I don't have a lot of pride tied up into what I've got or like.

Oh man, reminds me of Angel Air tanks... people played pocket pool over those things back in the day.Paintball Selection and Storage - How to make your niche paintball part idea.

I have Angel Air locksocks on my 80/4500. It makes people scratch their heads thinking I've got a fancy new Infamous tank with the Angel Air reg on there. Then they look at me again and say something stupid like, "why didn't you just put grip tape on there?" Cuz that's ghetto and only good in a pinch, not the means to an end.

First strike rounds.
I got friends and team mates that dig those things.
Not my bag, and not a game changer if you play against them well.

Instead of calling you a hater I'll just call you what your persona comes off as, a miserable old man. You hate semi autos, macro line, electronic markers, FSR, HPA, etc. Every time I see one of your posts it's negative, you're complaining, or you think something someone is doing is stupid. Take a prozac and come back once you realize not everything is horrible and the innovations you hate are (and have been) bringing loads of new people into the sport.

| "So do you just want FSR banned period? Surely there's no way you think indoor FSR is a reasonable idea..."
I haven't given much thought to the practicalities of using of FSRs indoors, honestly. I just didn't want to categorically say they should be banned when my objection to them is purely an environmental concern. If they are being used in some place where it is feasible to clean them up afterwards and they are actually getting cleaned up, I don't have the same concerns. They'll still end up in a landfill most likely, but that's better than them breaking down into micoplastics in the wild. Technically, it would even be possible to recycle the collected debris, though polystyrene has a recycling number of 6, which means it is harder to recycle and not all facilities are able to handle it.
What I really want is for Tiberius Arms to find a biodegradeable material to replace the polystyrene, preferably something that degrades nearly as quickly and easily as gelatin does, and to switch to that. I don't play magfed but I recognize that FSRs represent the first major improvement in paintball ballistics in decades. I would rather that we not lose that innovation, but I am not in favor of trashing the places we play (and the watersheds where they sit) just to keep it.

I’d argue mag fed is overrated with the exception of first strike use. they are just overly bulky setups that serve no benefit.
I did give mag fed a go three times. TiPX, T8.1 and T9.1, and a Tacamo converted A5. The vests pouches holsters and such to run them effectively was just annoying, bulky, heavy and too warm in hot weather. And since I too cheap to run first strikes they really offered zero benefit to me. Id much rather run my SL68II with the 50rnd hopper a 27/3k tank(prefer this to 13/3k for comfort) and 5 10rnd tubes on a sleeve on the tank. Much much smaller package and carrying more paint than I could fit on my vest setups.
Tighter still is to just play full on stock class with a PGP, shotgun belt with 10rnd tubes and 12Gs and a dump pouch. Have tried this but admittedly I suck at playing stock class.

gabe Please don't tell people to go to the more toxic version of Paintball. LOL!
I'm dabbling in Magfed on my own terms. I'm building bits and baubles on my existing markers, as well as a kick ass project that I'll be test running at MMG 2021. The thing I HATE HATE HATE with Magfed is the fact that they say it's so affordable. Awwwwhellllnaw. Expensive mags, if you run a few varieties of Magfed markers, then you have to buy into a range of mags. I've got TMC, TiPX, and Hammer7/DL-9/etc... mags in my inventory now. That's annoying as hell. If you really want to play limited paint, affordably, then 10rd tubes is where it's at... regardless of playing semi or pump. FS is the only limiting factor but I don't care about that stuff.

Barrel insert kits. What a bunch of marketing baloney. Seems like every day on r/paintball we're having to talk impressionable kids out of dropping $200 for a Freak kit because the Gardners somehow convinced half the paintball world that you absolutely must match your bore to your paint to a 1/1000th inch tolerance. As if paintballs are manufactured consistently to that high degree of precision.
And then the guys who fell for the gimmick and already blew $200 on this nonsense pipe up to defend it because now they are invested in the belief that it works.
The Automag: Not as clumsy or random as an electro. An elegant marker for a more civilised age.

Running drills Wednesday night and all I was getting roll outs half the time on the Cocker, after I matched the paint. Manufacturing QA is the problem. Getting a good match is nice, but the whole experience is the make or break there... I use it because I don't have a good enough sized barrel to stop rollouts. But then again, I don't have a good enough Freak to stop them either! LOL!

Upgraded tank regs.
never seen a single measure of performance for a tank reg and yet “this one does performance better” is still said.
But honestly it’s all over rated we do it all just for fun. To enjoy the game we need a 200 ball hopper no pod pack and a pump or blowback.
everything else is just for the heck of it. The whole game is just for the heck of it.
I’m disheartened by the next generation having a low opinion of PPS but I guess that’s how it goes. I think most of that comes from “it’s different, I don’t get it, so it’s bad”
Like the blazer is better and faster than almost any cocker. Only disadvantage is stock setup isn’t made to be used with low cocking force mainspring so if you misfeed it’s a for sure chop unlike a cocker which you can set up pretty light cycle force in most cases. Other disadvantage is that it’s unique, and cockers are standard.

I agree but I didn’t mention it because paintball is one of the few things 3D printing is actually good for. Paintball and RC car parts and...not much else. My advice to anyone interested in 3D printing is to spend that money on a saw or a lathe. Then, every time you would be buying your next 3D printer you buy a drill press or whatever. In a decade you’ll have an actual shop and the other guy would just have a bunch of 3D printers that all have some problem a newer one doesn’t have.

Autococker barrel threads. While I'm grateful that we at least have a standard barrel thread these days (for the most part), there's no need for a 2" shank and 25 turns to remove a barrel.

The obsession with lightweight markers. I don't want to be lugging around a vm68 everywhere but fretting over half a pound in a marker, then adding a forcefeed hopper, big tank, and strapping yourself down with 6 pods seems unnecessary. Modern markers might be pretty light, but your average 2006 era electro or cocker is plenty light enough, there's really no issue carrying it around for a full day.

At the performance level of 99.9999999% of players, there are no appreciable gains from 99.9% of the "enhancements" available for our equipment. Many of us like to think of ourselves as playing at a level where we "need" the performance gains of whatever bit of kit has currently captured our fancy, but it's a load of nonsense.
-
Oh yes, it's half the fun in itself, actually. I'm not raising an objection, just being clear-eyed about the relationship the vast majority of us (myself most definitely included) have with paintball gear. I'll forever be in the market for the next little piece of kit to obsess over.
