    Image hosting + (rant)

(glad the site is back up and running, congrats)

I'm sorry, are we still using imgur or even worse.. photobucket to host pictures? how much screwery does Photobucket have to pull to show you that they are not your friend? Ok i'll calm down. I used to use it over a decade ago, then moved to imageshack which was great. But then when their service stopped being so free, i moved on to postimages.org which has been the best experience i've had so far for the last few years now. There's clearly a bunch of places to store pictures, but for hosting on forums, it's the most efficient for me.

I would recommend it for anyone who is looking to move their pictures elsewhere because photobucket is STILL going back and watermarking old pictures from these oldschool vintage forum threads, because they want you go pay them like $6 i think to reenable their 3rd party hosting feature. There's plenty of image hosting options, i just want to offer what has been easy, free and reliable for me lately. I primarily interact with forums from my PC, so i'll try postimages from my phone right now to see if it's also good. i don't know.

I don't like the size of the attachments so I'm sticking with imgur.

Photobucket is trash. I copied all my content from it, and forgot about it.

New forum seems to allow direct linking to images from regular web hosting again.

I keep my images on http://fubarius.com/pictures/ but before I couldn't link to them since it wasn't a "https://" fancy hosting.

              So quick test...

If you see a P-12 with a K-frame it's working (sadly I don't have that frame any more).

A quick how too. Click the "Image" button on the top of the posting box, looks like this...
Click image for larger version Name:	button.jpg Views:	0 Size:	2.1 KB ID:	1825
...enter URL from your sever. Uncheck the "Retrieve remote file and reference locally" box (unless you want that, thought it gave me an error), and you'r good to go. Image displayed, but fully in your control if it's on your sever, which could be important to some people.

If you click on the "upload attachment" button at the bottom of the reply area, you can upload pictures directly from your computer without having to host them somewhere else. You can also choose a thumbnail or a size (small, medium, or large). All the sizes except large are clickable to show fill size.

                  thumbnail
Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_9554.JPG Views:	0 Size:	82.9 KB ID:	2069

                  small
Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_9554.JPG Views:	0 Size:	82.9 KB ID:	2070

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_9554.JPG Views:	0 Size:	82.9 KB ID:	2071

                    Here's a more detailed how-to:
                    1. Click on this button.

Click image for larger version Name:	click button.jpg Views:	0 Size:	123.4 KB ID:	2085
                    2. Choose a picture to upload. (You can also control-click more than one.)

Click image for larger version Name:	choose picture.jpg Views:	0 Size:	77.9 KB ID:	2084
                    3. Once the picture is uploaded, you'll see it below the text box. Move your cursor where you want the picture, and then click on the size you want with your mouse.

Click image for larger version Name:	choose size.jpg Views:	0 Size:	11.6 KB ID:	2083
                    4. Post picture.

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_9554.JPG Views:	0 Size:	82.9 KB ID:	2082

and the Photobucket issue has a work around with a chrome extension

Is there any way to link pictures from Google Photos? Everything I can find on their end uses scripts to access the images rather than a direct link.

                        Code:
                        https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipOfiCOGeuT8GB7DBuorH1WmzA2kQ_ZvI6-6cFi7
note the lack of an image extension (.jpg, .png, etc)
                        cellophane's feedback

Yes, you can. But it's a little annoying. And you need a second web browser.
                          1. Log into your Google account with your normal web browser (like Chrome).
                          2. Find the photo in Google photos.
                          3. Click on share and select "create link." Then copy that link.
                          4. This is the annoying part. Open up a second web browser (like Firefox or Internet Explorer). Make sure you are NOT signed into your Google account on that browser.
                          5. Paste the copied photo link into the address bar and hit enter so the image loads.
                          6. Right click on the image and select "copy image address." (This will be different than the URL you pasted into the address bar, but it still will not have a .jpg at the end.)
                          7. Come back to MCB and insert the image into your post like any other URL image. Don't forget to un-click the box that says "retrieve remote file and reference locally."

Here's an example photo linked from my Google account:

The reason you need a second web browser is because of some unseen coding that happens in your Google account. If you try to copy the file location in the first web browser, that browser knows you're signed into Google and it's giving you some extra options of things to do with that image that wouldn't be available otherwise. So if you copy the image location there, it won't work for linking because everyone else doesn't have permission to do those extra things. The second browser, however, fixes those issues, because then you're looking at the URL the same way other people would, without those extra things.

I should mention, however, that I'm not sure how long a link to a Google photo will last. If you're only posting an image in a sale thread for a few days or weeks, then it's probably fine. The links won't expire that fast. If you're doing something else and you want the photos to be visible for months or even years, however, I would go through the effort of uploading the pictures as attachments.

I’d be in favor of an auto insta 1 day ban for anyone trying to link photobucket or imageshack, both are cancer for any forum.
