    Who's the go-to for chopping barrels?

    Howdy,

    I have Shocker-threaded 18" Smart Parts Big Daddy barrel with a .684" bore. The front is glued to the control bore back. The bore size is definitely useful around here, but 18" is most certainly not. I'd like to have 4" chopped off the front and then re-glued. Anyone have any recommendations?

      A pipe cutter works great if you want to DOY it ...

              What's the best way to get rid of the epoxy- melt, dissolve? I do need to pick up a pipe cutter and I'm like DIY...

                  Heat (hair dryer, not flame) and acetone ... Sand what you can first ...
                  tape what you want to keep clean to no damage the ano on the front ... Or polish the entire thing ...

                      Stainless, like a glued Boomstick, was always easiest because you could use a torch with no problems. Heat it up, slides out easy. Don't need to wipe out extra glue. Just cut the front to length, heat again, slide it back in, cool. Never came loose.

                          BMC can cut the back and re thread it. Please do not have the tip rethreaded. If you want it to freak bore the back he can do that too.

                              BMC does awesome work. Had him cut down some twistlock barrels for me, and freak bore one of them. They work and look great.

                                  I've used a chopsaw with carbide tipped blade to cut a 16 inch barrel to a 14, was it sketchy, yes, did I do it with some sense of knowing what I was doing, no, came out okay, wouldn't recommend doing it on the regular

                                          Anyone know if Smart Parts glued barrels were threaded? Would a heat gun work for melting the glue, or do I need to bust out the MAPP torch?

                                              No, if they were threaded there would not have been any reason to glue them.

                                              I think a torch might wreck the anno on an aluminum barrel.

                                                I've seen stranger things, so I felt like I had to ask. I think you're right on the torch. Heat gun it is.

                                                  Torches work fine, but you do need to avoid overheating the aluminum and discoloring the anno. It has to get REALLY hot to do that, though.... much hotter than the melting point of adhesives.
