But either way I LOVE the idea. Hopper ball is simply a lot of fun to play. And generally when I play that way the Azodin pumps my go too. It’s more than enuff fire power to match the rentals and slow enuff that I don’t burn threw my hopper in the first couple minutes. It’s generally my preferred style of play the only challenging factor I run into is when there’s lots of owners with electros feeding pods after pods of paint limiting movement. Your rulings would remove that hurdle and add to the fun.
Tinybear (et al...) that's my normal predilection for over-complication again.

    How 'bout this:
ER2 BOX: Each player gets a brand new, in-the-box ER2 at the beginning of the event, and starts each game with 30 balls of good paint.
    >> The $30 cost of the ER2 is part of the entry fee.
    >> Have a target shooting contest using only the paint that comes with the marker
    >>> Should be pretty amusing.

ER2 OPEN: Each player plays with a modified or out-of-the box ER2 (or an ER2S)
    >> Non-agitated Hopper ball
    >>> 50, 150, 200 (or whatever)
    >> Still need prizes for best/most absurd mods

Should there be a special class for ER2 Stock Play? I mean... Stock is Stock, right?
RENTAL BALL: Mix experienced players (EP's) in with renters
    >> EP's can bring whatever they got, but are limited to non-agitated hopper ball.

I have played Hopper-ball Pump vs Mech-semi (and E-Semi) quite a bit, and it's almost always a lot of fun. I love when the ref asks "You sure you want to use that?".

In regard to Brokeass_baller being the only guy on the field playing with an ER2(S), I aim to play with one this season, but I'll be a few hours south of you. Right now I am in the process of finding a good field in the N/W ATL area. Odds are It'll be Arkenstone

      A thought:

Low ROF = more movement and less pinning.

That means the game design is more flexible since the game won't stalemate and force TDM. Meaning:

Objectives and flags and capture zones and things like payloads to move and bombs to plant (etc, see, overwatch and CSGO and similar) will be much more workable as game styles. Heck run a variety with a different mode per point, like they do in gaming.

Want it to take off? Well, are there any pro teams that put out good content and would try it out for a video or two? Content and funky ideas are huge in disc golf and other things I follow, but I haven't followed paintball influences for a while so...

I was thinking Capture the Flag as the basic format. Your basic "X" points for a win, minus "Y" points for jerk moves.

I was also thinking additional "Z" points each non-eliminated player at the end of the game.

Most points at the end of the tourney is the overall winner.

In ER2 OPEN, there would be a separate competition for cool mods.

Bear in mind that points for kills slows the game down because it tips the incentive balance towards not getting shot. Game design is all about incentive balancing. Generally simpler =better from a ref and admin load point of view too.

I'd say: point for a pull, point for a hang (if anything a pull should be worth more) and, get this: unlimited respawn by touching both your own corners and then the start box.

The incentive balance then favors fast, aggressive, objective play.

Not points for eliminations. That's pretty much the opposite of my intent. Awarding additional points for non-eliminated players is pretty simple for the refs as it takes place after the game. This format should remove the incentive to simply eliminate the other team and put the focus on movement, maneuvering, and teamwork. Together with paint and marker limitations, the format should result in some fun and challenging paintball. A bit like the old IROC series or One Design races in sailing which put the focus on participant skill.

No points for hangs, pulls, etc... I always thought that was like awarding points for a 1st down or passing the ball to the forward - yes I mixed sports there.

Basically, my fevered-dream tourney would be "Capture-the-flag" where teams get a win by getting the opponents flag and returning it to their own base. Super simple; pretty much anyone can tell who wins in an event like that. Center Flag is also a very simple option, and anyone can tell who just won. And if yer gonna consider Center Flag, you kind of have to look at Race To.

The reason to award points for a pull is to stop people waiting to eliminate the other team before going for the flag, as is currently the case in all speedball. The originall design goal of center flag was to fix that, (but it was a complete failure in race/xball, nothing changed). Center flag plus your marker limitations might do the trick. If it didn't work, can add points for the pull, reduce team size, increase field size, or increase bunker density, or any combo of those. I don't understand the logic behind points for live players after the game though - is it to separate tie games? Or are you giving points for *not* shooting everyone in the other team? That's kinda cool if so.

Ezzakly. It is to incentivize NOT shooting everyone on the other team.

I like how this started off as basically re-inventing Stock Class and now it's quickly moving towards re-inventing Survival Game.

I'm all for it though I think an all ER2 game would be really fun to play! The problem with stock class is that the markers are getting pretty rare and niche, it's not something the general public can easily get into. ER2's are perfect though, super cheap and readily available. Anyone who can afford a day of paintball, renter or gear owner, can afford an ER2.

Have the refs hand out the paint as the players are entering the field, and retrieve what's left at the end. That way you know that the teams are starting out with what they're supposed to.

Here are the rules for a 4 x 7 man tournament played at the St Marys Shakespeare Festival grounds. I think they stopped this event.

Rules and Safety Teams will field 7 players. Teams may have one substitute, for a total of 8 players. All guns will be set below 250 ft/sec and checked by radar-chrome meters. Team captains can...

                          Rules and Safety
                          • Teams will field 7 players. Teams may have one substitute, for a total of 8 players.
                          • All guns will be set below 250 ft/sec and checked by radar-chrome meters. Team captains can request field judges to check an opposing players velocity at any time which is convenient for the judges to do so. Any player who is caught firing with a velocity over 250 ft/sec will be ejected from the tournament and his team will have to finish a man down.
                          • Only Semi-automatic guns will be allowed in the tournament. No response triggers or double action triggers. Basically, the gun is only legal if the trigger pull and release produces one round fired. Violation of this rule is ejection and the team will have to finish the entire tournament a man down.
                          • Any player who removes his face protection while on the field will be ejected for that round of play, and his team will have to finish that round a man down.
                          • All guns must have a barrel sock or barrel plug when the gun is not in the field of action. Violation of this rule will cause the player to sit out for the next 10 minutes without player substitution (that team one man down). It is recommended that teams carry a couple extra plugs or socks.
                          • If the targeted player is within 15 feet of the shooter, the shooter must ask the targeted player to surrender before firing. Long sleeves and padding are recommended. Violation of this rule is 10 minute sit out and a man down.
                          • The Tournament Director has the right to add and alter regulations and rules on the day of the tournament if he sees that there is a need to do so.

                          Tournament format
Each Team will play 4 games to gain as many points as possible. The 4 teams with the highest points will advance to a single elimination tournament to fight for the Trophy.

                          Game Format
Four teams will take the field at once, their starting positions determined by their color. Teams will be White, Orange, Red, and Yellow; identified with arm bands; and each team firing their corresponding color of paint (paint provided). Each team is fighting against all of the three other teams on the field. Teams will be awarded one point for every member who is still active at the end of the round, and one point for each kill recorded. When a player is hit, they must report to the scoring table. That player who was hit must sit out for 5 minutes before returning to the action. The “sit out” time begins as soon as the hit player is recorded at the scorer's table. Field judges will have radio contact with the scoring table. Each team will be given 2,000 rounds of paint per game and they get to keep any left-over paint. Teams will not play the same color twice. The four teams with the highest combined scores will advance to the semi-final games.

Semi-final and Final Game Format: Post the Flag
For these games, only two teams will take the field at one time. Each team starts with a team flag at their home base. The object is to gain points by posting your team flag in the middle of the field and then defend it. Teams get one point for each minute of flag posting and one point for each kill. The time limit is 40 minutes on these Semi Finals and Final, with 2,000 rounds given to each team.

Modify as needed... such as number of paintballs, type of guns, number of players, etc. I wish they were still doing this. It looks like it was real fun.

That's a hopper and a half per person, I like that, enough to have fun with a semi without going crazy.

Certainly not a bad starting point. 285.7 balls per player is acceptable since these are fairly long games. and 250 fps... I think my ER2 can do that.
Get rid of the word "kill" though. We're not Klingons, after all.
