    Cast iron barrel

    Hear me out

Probably the best non stick pan I have in my house is a cast iron skillet. Once seasoned it's just amazing.

Weight aside.... Why not make a barrel? Season it with a little oil and bam.... Shoot through any break

We also have Teflon pans and while they do a decent job of non stick, it always seems to wear off over time

    Million dollar idea right there.

Would rust be an issue? Would even a very thin layer of seasoning affect the paint passing over it? One of, if not the, best barrels I’ve ever used was a 14” stainless steel. Yes it was heavy but i loved it.

Being a cast iron fan, I love this idea.

To play devil's advocate, I remember talking to CCI Mike Casady about barrels and he pointed out that every tiny detail can have a significant effect, since we're talking about low velocity low mass projectiles.

So I think it would be a fun idea to play around with, but imagine there would be a challenge (and some fun!) trying to get a nice smooth consistent bore.

Who knows, maybe this is the secret ingredient?

I doubt it, my pan goes forever before needing any real maintenance. It's one of those things that the more you use it the better shape its in. You may need to oil your barrel? But maybe even the oils from paint would be enough to keep the inside in good shape.

          Threading may be an issue

Who said the cast iron needed to be threaded? Just put a back on it made from another material.. perhaps brass?

So would you pour a solid rod, then bore through it?

Im just trying to think of manufacturing the beast.

            Durabar. Continuously cast iron.

So do I clean it with bacon grease just like my cooking pans?

the inside of the barrel has to be smooth. not lubricated. were talking paintball, not a rifle.
put a few drops of oil in the barrel and run some paint through it and se how it shoots.

granted, the iron pipe can be very thin but also prone to rust if not oiled; which is what you dont want in a paintball barrel.

again, iron and steel make sense for a rifle that has to deal with heat, paintball does not.

We are talking about only enough oil to coat the surface though, not any quantity that would build up.

You would need to oil the outside of the barrel as well, that would be strange

You could run it patina style on the outside.

All this talk about oiling the insides of barrels reminds me of my early days of playing. Pretty much the only paint we could get locally was Brass Eagle. That stuff oiled your barrel whether you wanted it to or not. I swear some of those 200 rnd containers would have 1/4” of mineral oil settled at the bottom.

This thread sort of woke up my stomach this morning. I dig.

About a decade ago, a local metal-fab shop and a sort of art troupe got together to have an event. They actually built a coal-fired iron cupola, rammed some molds, and cast up a bunch of cool designs.

Anyway, they'd opened the event beforehand, to the point where anybody could come in, pay a fee, and ram a mold, to have it cast in grey iron the next day at the actual pour.

I so wanted to have something cast, but I'd have needed a master- something to 'ram' into the mold to, you know, make the mold. I could have made a wooden mold or something, but what I really kind of wanted to do was make a cast-iron VM-68 body.

I figured that'd be something to make a real man's gun. Play a day with that, and you'll have Schwarzenegger arms in no time.

                      Doc.
