    Making a nonremovable barrel... Removable.

An MCB'er sent me an older Nelson pump, with a unibody with a 14" bull barrel, which he wanted made removable. With the help of a bandsaw, the job was easy.

The main reason I made this video, however, was simply to get a little more experience shooting and editing a video. Still a green noob at doing so, but I'm getting better, and this mod was a nice, quick, simple one.

The only major flub was the camera apparently glitched when I was doing the threading, and didn't save the clips. But I thought the rest came out reasonably well.

    Lemme know what'cha think.

YouTube age-restricted the vid. Can't let kids see metal-working...

Both my Razorback III and Bushmaster have fixed barrel syndrome. The Razorback has shark gill barrel venting, so I don't think it is a candidate.

It would be a real challenge to get the gills straight, and it seems almost cruel to ask someone to do that.

    But the Bushmaster....

YT didn't, apparently I did. The "age restriction" thing looks like the icon for a drop-down menu, and I clicked on it out of curiosity. Once "saved", that can only be undone by filing an "appeal". I figure they'll have that taken care of in a day or two, so my bad.

The Razorback would indeed be a bit of a challenge, but if you'd like, I think I can do it.

The Bushmaster is easy- I've done a bunch. (This video one is hardly my first. ) The only thing to remember is that the cut for 'Cocker threads happens behind the pump grip, meaning if you take the barrel off, the pump flops down. It's no big if you're used to it, but occasionally a customer will complain- "why doesn't the pump stay up like on my other Bushmaster?" etc.

Two other things: You of course lose about 1-3/8" of barrel length in this mod, and it's worth noting that the newly-made removable barrel can also be Freak-bored. (The customer for this Blackhawk intends to use LAPCO sizers, which is another option.)

Are you taking on this kind of work?

-"This kind of work" is quite literally my day job.

This marker in particular was sent to me by an MCB'er about two weeks ago or so.

I have a dumb question for DocsMachine on that note ... Have you ever used tap and dye to make cocker thread or any thoughts on it?
seems like an alternative to single point ....
Would it be feasible for a paintball application?

Where did you get the tool at 0:33 for removing the frame screws? That looks like it works a lot better than a quarter or flat-head screw driver.
                    I can haz feedback?
If I owe you feedback, just remind me, as I sometimes forget.

-Certainly. I've never used a die, as single-pointing is easier and more precise, but I've used a tap more than a few times. That's because it's not always easy to set up a body in a lathe to single-point it, whereas if you're already milling, drilling and boring it in the mill, it's easy to use a tap to make the female threads.

You have to be careful to make sure the threads start straight and all, but that's usually easy enough.

                      -I made it, of course.

Back in the old shoebox Shocker days, I was working on so many of them that I made myself a set of custom-fit "screwdrivers" for the various body plugs. That way I wouldn't be scratching up the anno using a regular screwdriver.

Used to sell 'em by the set, too.

While the shoebox work has long since faded away, having a wide, non-marring screwdriver for things like those thumbscrews and other features has been very handy. Point in fact, that small one has been used so much it's nearly worn out. I either need to make another or mill it back a bit to refresh the edge.

                      Doc.

Hey Doc, think it'd be possible to do something like this on a Brute maybe, with one of those interesting o ring detent systems?

Basically, it should be possible for nearly any typical Nelson-based, fixed-barrel marker, with a nominal 1" OD.

DocsMachine Since most thread might be too big to make an adaptor direclty could you make and adaptor that would allow to use a freak XL insert and a standard freack back (cocker or spyder or ion) and that would fit the SL68?
