If my PM's from the old site had survived I wouldn't have to make this thread, I thought we chatted over FB too, but I traced my PM's back a whole year and I couldn't find anything. So yeah, memory sucks, and I want to give credit when I make a video about these 2 neat 98's. One was gold leaf plated, and the other painted with very high quality and durable paint.

        Rustolium.....

People underestimate it. If you take your time and do it right the results are really good. And I specifically use the enamel clear coat on top.

I should try a red white and blue triple fade...

Also, I haven't done another golf leaf since that one. Not sure I'm ever going to do another whole marker

I've used the black/red one several times, it looks as good as the day you finished it. The gold leaf on the other hand, well.... hindsight says I should have just asked for gold paint lol. Its got a couple rashes from being shifted around while stored, I never played a game with it but I shot it a few times.

Rustoleum is pretty damned good, I was amazed and the results when I had a local guy paint up the Splattttttt Memorial Gun with it.... He was the go-to guy back in the 90s for the NHL custom hockey helmets

                Yes.

I start with bare metal, which is sometimes a pain on the tippmanns

I might have to give this a shot. Worst case Ontario I’m out $20 in spray paint and I have to resand.

Spray paint really is underrated. People don't take the proper time to clean their equipment before painting, and they don't prime or clear coat, and wonder why it chips in a month.

I don't do anything fancy, but have had great luck with basic single color applications on trigger frames, Tippmann bodies, and bicycles, etc. Use a good, heavy degreaser to clean it up, and rough up the surface with a Brillo pad or sandblasting. I use Safety Kleen. It's an industrial Windex, basically. Does a great job getting rubber and grease off of my tools at work in the factory, and does an even better job with hand oils and paintball goo on PB gear. Then once it's all dry, spray numerous thin coats of a good etching primer and let each coat completely dry. After you've thoroughly primed it, do the same with whatever spray paint color you want. And after that's all completely dry, do the same with clear coat. A job well done will take two or three days to complete. But it'll be far more durable than most would believe.

Are you leaving the factory paint on or stripping it off?

It seems to me that tippmann, like most things, doesn't put the best paint/powder coat/whatever it is on their markers and over time they peel off. I've always gone to bare metal because I don't want the layer under my paint job to start pulling up

I’ve painted two guns, a BT-4 and and X7. The BT-4’s paint came off really easy. The X7 was a huge pain. I got most the paint off but took serious effort.

Painting was a fun process and something I should try again and do some more interesting paint jobs like Trbo has done. The X7 I tried to do a flat black/gloss black camo job but the colours were too close. Should have used a dark grey.

Now you have me thinking about the BT-4 I have in the basement….

Necro time. If the body is already etched with sandblasting is it necessary to use a self etching primer as well?

Nope. I would use a primer but it doesn't need to be self etching unless you have a super smooth/shiny surface you are trying to paint to.

Just make sure it's super clean
