The current state and future of "Scenario" paintball.

Whats the MCB hoads take on Scenarios these days? Do they even really exist anymore? Or is it just Big Games now? Where do you think its heading? Any producers putting on games that are under the radar?

What do you guys think is missing or some changes from back in the day you would like to see come back?

I miss the GRSP era a lot, having role players and medics and shit....and dare I say homemade launchers in abundance, the night play. Don't get me wrong I'll take whatever paintball I can get and there are some really amazing fields but the games just don't feel nearly as good as they used to.

    What about you guys?

"Scenario" and "big game" just seems to describe a day of heavy overshooting and general douchery most of the time.
And God turned to Gabriel and said: “I shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

This has been my experience the last few years as well. Lots of playing on and just straight up ignoring hits too.

Can't say I disagree. I like big games that are played properly but every single one I've been to there have always been assholes the play on, wipe hits, blatantly ignore rules and then act all hurt when someone just finally has enough and unloads on them. I'll be honest I enjoyed socializing the most out of everything at Wasaga. Getting spawn trapped so early on and the nobody caring sucked, I'm glad we pushed them back and won in the end but some things there it was like is anyone actually running this game?

There’s no role play anymore, just loose objectives. I wish they had more of the old school stuff. Scenarios can be fun, big games get old for me kind of quick.

I think they are a blast. Invasion of Normandy game at Skirmish is my favorite game of the year. If you get wrapped up in an over shooting situation move to another part of the field. There are objectives at all the games I play and if you keep an open mind and play your own game it’s fun as hell. I personally like big games over all types of play. It’s nothing new for some people to get aggressive in their play but just walk away and explore.

I don't like em. Just walkon play on a much larger, more unorganized scale. The ones where it's multiple games throughout the day sounds like it's better than the all day ones where barley anyone plays the objective and half the players are in the safe zone at any given time.

Scenarios died 15 years ago. Now it's all just "put as many people on the smallest field cranking as high a BPS as possible and call it a scenario"

        -or-
If you didn't get a character card, it's not a scenario

Here in NZ there was a magfed club that went full LARP. Characters, professional paid actors and writers, multi day plot lines and so on. The actual combat was maybe 50% of the scenario, with the rest being larp.

Stuff like being kidnapped and taken away in vans from your *actual* house, and then dropped off in an abandoned town (a full on town that was once a film set made a good field), double agents, assassinations, everything. And if you didn't stay in character you'd be sent home.

I've never even heard of anything else on that level.

It helps that many of them were Weta employees, so there was no shortage of costumes and sets.

uhhh as a team that Heavily focuses on objectives (you know actually winning) I think it depends on the game and generals. Sometimes a field doesn't play well and you just get stuck shooting each other all day. Sometimes the generals struggle to be effective in coordinating players which leads to disorganized objective taking.

I would say there are a few excellent scenario games, such as "Fulda" and "Bones and Ashes". There are just a lot of factors that influence if you are just blasting paint or playing in a style you prefer.

If you are looking for an Experience with role play and fun stuff like that, but are ok with some intensity... Platoon Leader is... ugh... something to look forward to. Although it is limited paint/magfed only.

I will attest I don't see too many small scenario games, most are wrapped up in large events. This is largely field dependent though as I know some fields will try to flavor things to make them interesting.

My argument is that neither Fulda Gap nor Bones and Ashes are Scenarios, they're just big games. Lots of people and lots of paint with a full field open, and some loose objectives...a bit of a far cry from the days of MXS or when Viper games were on point.

I'll have to look into Platoon Leader as I've never heard of it but being that I've shot my Phantom at events more then anything else limited paint is fine.

The best actual scenarios I’ve played were all put on my Mission Masters at Three Rivers Paintball in Pittsburgh. It was like 6-7 mini games with objectives and actual eliminations. The problem was that turnout was pretty shitty the last couple I went to

I think I prefer the mini game style to the day long battles, those just turn into a grind with a ton of walking. I had a lot of fun at the last big game at splat tag in Wisconsin though.

I talked to a few people at Endless Legends last week about Mission Masters, we will probably try and catch one of their games next year and see what's up.

I went to a place toward La Crosse I think. Maybe 12-13 years ago. Don't remember what the place was called or if it's even still open. But it was a similar thing with a half dozen small scenario settings with an objective in each. Each one was designed for 3v3 games. My team didn't do so well, but we had fun anyway.

I went to one down by Milwaukee a few weeks back. It was based on the Fallout video games. Basically, it was a free-for-all with 5 main "quest lines". There were props & collectables that tied into the quest lines, as well as various factions. Some people were hardcore about getting objectives done while there were a bunch of others who didn't even care about the objectives and wanted to be a thorn in other peoples' sides. Some people made allies while others played alone. This was a true free-for-all game that was what you made it.

I finished all 5 quest lines with ChoSanJuan and Mkeeks , but I really had to adjust to the format and wrap my head around the concept, given how things played out initially. I didn't get a good handle on things until after lunch when some other story elements came into play that created a little more structure. After we saw how the world events were going, we had better ideas of how to accomplish our objectives. We even skirted around the standard/built-in ways to accomplish objectives. Haggling, throwing money around or even straight-up bribery was so much fun. It was slow & honestly not much fun at first, but when I realized the different ways we could do things I started having fun.

One thing I forgot to mention- there were perks you could buy/trade for. The format was also limited paint- limited to your hopper and one tube. (~340 rounds) The only way you could carry more was, of course, acquiring the heavy gunner perk. There were other ones too, but I don’t remember many of them because I didn’t prioritize getting any.

What was the turn out like? That sounds like a great event to play and way more in the vein of what we hope to get from a scenario.

Uh... That's a good question. Just visualizing it again... I'd say maybe 60-90? I know that's not very specific, but I'm a terrible judge of crowd size. Could've been 100 there and I wouldn't know, lol.
