.690 nelson paint - we want it, we can get it we just have to work together ...

You are not reading this wrong!
After years of whining myself and listening to everyone else bitch and moan I decided to make a call when I saw nelsons new website.

after talking to a very Helpful sales person there, they are happy to do a run of ultra premium custom .690 paint just like they used to make in the 80's and 90's. the catch? none really except a 2 pallet minimum, 6-8 week lead time.

with some outside commitment from the community I am willing to make most of this purchase, and facilitate shipping and distribution from Northern California though my business. to do it i would like to raise about 50% of the wholesale cost which will end up being about 11-12K shipped to my door - they are sending a formal qoute.

these would need to end up selling for about 80$/case I'm set up to pack and ship individual cases, and this will involve allot of work on my end once it arrives, and I'd like to end up encouraged to do this again if it works out

reaching out to M.Carter for opinions, gauge interest, see if there is something I'm not thinking about for taking this on.

some things i'm asking you all:
    • I hate facebook and I'm not spreading word beyond Mcarter Brown, and calls to peeps i know - maybe thats not enough, but if your buddies want in they should come back here.
    • would you be willing to "kickstart" me with a $50 down payment on a case? to much? what would work?
    • how much would you be willing to buy
    • you don't know me from Adam unless you go to Bacci mountain once a year so why should you send me money? can we set it up so you do feel good about it?
    • can we convince a couple fields to sell this and move some volume?
    • would fields outlaw a bigger ball? what are we up against
    • is .690 the spec we want? according to nelson the current spec for paint is .675 - .680 - (who the hell is setting this?) we would need to set a range. .688 -.692? I'm hoping they can pull a mid 90's spec and just use that....
I gotta get back to work . let the internet do its thing!! let me know what you think!! stop whining!

I kid you not, when I was a ref we occasionally randomly ended up shooting red fill Nelson at North Shore Paintball in Vancouver.

Here is the truly funning thing paintball is a sport primarily based on .68 caliber so they ARE supposed to be 0.68 -/+ some limit . I really do not care if they are 0.675 or 0.680 or 0.690 I just want them to be consistently sized in a box, reasonably spherical and fresh.

For me, it’s not so much the size, it’s the tolerance/consistency. Although, I’ll admit I’d like to see .689” as nominal.

I’m skeptical they can hold a .005” profile tolerance on a sphere with basic diameter .6xx” during manufacturing, but certainly not during shipping/storage.

The current ASTM is diameter .650-.709”, measured at seam axis and polar axis. I typically see .020” variance or more on the same paintball measured at various diametrically opposing points, worse from paintball to paintball.

I would pay $80/case for this, but since I do not think it’s feasible, at least not by the time it gets to my door, I’m out.

Closed bolts have my sympathy. I’ll continue to overbore.

Edit: I was too wordy with my response. Grendel beat me to it.

        • how much would you be willing to buy I would realistically want 2 cases, but maybe as much as 4. I'd have to think on it a bit cause I would love to have a ton of Nelson, but seem to always have 6 or 8 unopened bags in my house at all times.
        • you don't know me from Adam unless you go to Bacci mountain once a year so why should you send me money? can we set it up so you do feel good about it? If this is a scam it is bizarrely targeted and deliciously specific.
        • can we convince a couple fields to sell this and move some volume? I would be happy to talk to some field owners up here, I would want to know what Nelson is capable of producing since I know they're a bit smaller than the "paint giants".
        • would fields outlaw a bigger ball? what are we up against Why would they? As long as people are chrono-ing to field speeds and the balls fit in a .68 caliber paintball gun I don't see why they would blacklist a paint. They aren't appreciably more destructive or painful.

If you talk to a field owner and they need some reassurance, you can tell them that Southern Alabama Paintball, the largest scenario/woodsball field on the Gulf Coast, sells nothing but Nelson and has for years. They order it by the pallet, two grades of it. I'm sure if they were to email or call, the owner Greg Montee would be quite happy to share his experiences and explain why he's a diehard Nelson guy.*

*Spoiler alert: Greg is big on buying American, and won't stock foreign-made paint so long as he can afford to get his hands on American-made paint of acceptable quality. That being said, the field staff and regular players are pretty happy with the quality of the Nelson paint.

I forgot that comments don't have the robust text editing that would let me insert a link, so here's the url: www.southernalabamapaintball.com.

I know it wasn't their paint, but is there an option for something like Gater Black? For the youngins, black shell with neon green fill. Hard to see where its shot from and hard to insta-wipe.

Loved that stuff back in the day, especially when playing on shaded fields with lots of tree cover. I would sometimes mix in some bright yellow RPS at about a 1:10 ratio so I'd get the occasional tracer round.

California Magnums used to include tracer rounds in their packages.

        • my understanding is that we can get pretty much whatever we want in terms of color and fill combo. not sure how down on the gator black I'd be as I have a hard time seeing them as well... but majority would rule I suppose, and it is hard to see where they came from.....

The Nelson Ranger that my local field uses as its higher grade paint is a bronze shell with a neon green fill. In the woods, you can usually see it okay from the shooter's perspective since you are looking along its flight path, but it is pretty hard for anyone else to see from the side. Out in the open on a sunny day it is possible for everyone to see it in the air, just not as easily as brightly colored shells.

ETA: And the bronze/green combo might be a little quicker to make since Nelson is already producing it on a regular basis. Ranger, according to Nelson's description, is essentially Anarchy with a bit thicker shell. They tout the slightly higher toughness as a feature, not a bug, claiming that it is "formulated for woodsball" or somesuch because it more easily passes through foliage without breaking. Honestly, I must admit that there might be more than just marketing hype there. When I shoot D3FY tourney grade, the balls seem to explode if they so much as graze a leaf, but when I buy some Ranger from the field I can often get those one or two balls that pass through the bush and hit the guy.

I would be very much interested in large bore paint (the bigger the better), mainly to be able to use with my cam870. Assuming it were to arrive around the start of the 2022 spring season, I'd be down for 2 cases and would not mind the down payment.

I’d be in for a couple cases.

I would like to shoot some good paint for once. I just bought some Triumph and it’s the worst paint I’ve had in awhile. Measures between .635 and .670 and that might be the same paintball depending on which way you’re measuring. Total garbage.

The vast majority of old-school factory barrels, and a lot of early aftermarkets, are between .688" (which used to be known as a tight bore) and .692". Generally .688 is perfect for stock Sheridan brass.

Depending on the final cost, I'd be in for two to four cases, though I'll have no need of them 'til spring- that's my spring, not your SoCal spring. IE, around late April, early May.

I haven't ever bothered to use calipers or a paint sizer on it, but the Nelson Ranger we use at my home field will blow through but not fall through my .688 and .689 barrels. It will fall through an old stock Automag twistlock barrel, and I think those were like .692-.695.

Yeah I would buy a couple cases. Maybe if enough interest in garnered they would be willing to do more runs.

The only thing stopping me is most of the local fields are fpo, or at least the one in the springs is. spikeball or Criticalhammer might know of some byop fields, and if that's the case I would be in for a spring delivery. Lord knows literally all my pumps are the same age as me, and this Rapide I just picked up probably hates small paint.

Blitz is the only place that does BYOP but on Fridays. Dynamic, ColorSplash and APC are field paint only...

Laaaammmmeee. I work on fridays and that's a hell of a drive from south springs to blitz on a Friday. Would have to crash on a couch for that weekend.
