In Canada it accepted its only the lens that have the rating.
Some would just use the upper frame and lens no bottom but I think it changed to needing a bottom in recent years.

those air soft lower take paintball well, there will be denting but not extreme.

also you breath and communicate better on the field.

now a day my vio does the trick for me I no longuer use mesh lower.

That is bonkers. Go read ASTM F1776. You can find the F1776-16 version floating around online for free, which is the immediate predecessor to the current F1776-19 revision. Paintball eye protection is an integrated system. The masks help prevent the paint from dislodging the goggles or pushing its way between the goggle frame and the face. While the test impacts are directed against the goggle lens, without the protection of the mask the system would fail.

The mesh lowers aren’t free floating, they require zip ties(4) at my local field.

That is some outrageously stupid, airsoft-inspired bullshit. Mesh is inadequate. One of those fuckwits is going to lose a tooth sooner or later.

I'd write more, but for the sake of my blood pressure and community decorum, I'll cut it short. As a sport and a community, we had these arguments nearly 30 years ago, and I thought we'd settled them. It is infuriating to see airsoft's incoherent, cavalier approach to safety bleed over into paintball.

Canada is not a sue happy culture. There is less liability on the field for injuries. So they just about let you do what you want. PRZ is a wee bit wild but it’s a dam good time. Those Airsoft bottoms do stop a paintball just fine and not as dangerous as you would think. I would be more concerned and wouldn’t be caught dead using Airsoft goggles to play paintball it’s just stupid and an unnecessary risk.

This would never fly at any field in the US that cared to stay insured and in business. That’s a no go for any US based fields. Not saying it doesn’t happen at someplaces. But a field in the US is seriously putting itself out there if they allow safety gear designed for airsoft to be used in paintball.

I have a feeling the Canadian insurers would have some major concerns if they knew. Any injury where the person was not wearing proper safety equipment would be a huge liability and potentially void insurance coverage.

I still feel like a field in Canada field is less liable for injuries. Maybe I’m Totally off on that assumption but I got that impression after playing there. But I have to admit the only field I have played at in Canada is PRZ.

Right now my local field is dealing with a +450Lb guy who broke his ankle playing. The fields insurance covered his medical bills 100% but now he is going after pain and suffering. This has been going on for two + years now. I’m the insurance company / Fields “expert witness”. I’m sure the insurance will settle eventually on a pay out number and it was 110% the guys own fault. The guy was playing in clapped out Velcro shoes like the ones they give to nursing home patients. They were so worn he was basically walking on his ankles just asking for an accident.

Yeah any field with a legit insurance policy should not allow this.

Now that said, I doubt they are in any real danger, the reason the field should not allow this is because those masks have not been astm certified for paintball.

Interesting. I guess some people value “breathability” more than protection.

That being said, as long as the goggles are rated for paintball, everything else should be fair game. It’s not my face so to each their own.

I have played with just goggles in the past and I am sure many members on here have done the same. Fat lips and getting hit in the nose… Not much fun. The mesh would prevent most of that at least.

If I played airsoft, I'd definitely run a whippersnapper (with updated lense of course).
