You can’t assume house rules unless it was discussed at the morning meeting or whatever. That being said, the guy is clearly a massive jerk. He straight up confessed. Make sure he’s on your team in the future, make sure he knows why, because he’s a dangerous ass, it’s about all you can do. That and keep playing Paintball after he quits.

I played at a pistol event with an e-celeb several years ago at Hollywood Sports Park. He pushed the event and claimed to be all back to old-school traditions. Considering that I typically use gear older than most of the kids today, and that I always offer mercy, that was right up my alley. I had the e-celeb dead to rights to surrender. In fact I actually sat there for 10 seconds to see if he would even see me; NOPE. I offered surrender and he refused. Ya know what, I just walked away and said screw the rest of this event.
There are some that preach a good load of crap, claiming wanting to do things like the fun old days, and then there are folks that do that. It seems like there are more that preach and less that do.

I’ve been in a similar situation where I went to surrender a dude.
jumped over his waist high cover barrel pointed to his head, yelled surrender a couple times and the dude still whipped around to shoot me in the back of the leg.
I turned around and started laughing at the guy as I walked off. My team had already basically won the round and the dude looked completely clueless in my book.
after the round he also came up to me to say he didn’t surrender… which is such a stupid position to be in. “How dare you try and save me a welt… I play for keeps”

This is lame. I only surrender people. Walk ons should be surrender only. Take that tournament chest beating agg shit to team practice.
10 feet is too close. Period. Fields not enforcing this are risking a lawsuit. Violating insurance and equipment rules. Read any mask instructions and tell me what it says. Why is risking going blind still “cool” and “tough”.
I’ve been overshot by someone that thinks they are trying out for Ironman by playing walk on. Just makes me not want to offer them a burger and a beer.

Based on my experience and present research, you're speaking out of your bum.
Re: Masks - they warn you to replace the lens if you take a direct hit less than X distance; typically 10-15 feet. If one mask can do this, that means the ASTM standard allows it because they all must conform to the standards (edit: or they really do leave themselves open to a slam-dunk lawsuit...)
Re: Insurance - they all have their own policy and are subject to change, but those I've read only mention distance as a recommendation if mentioned at all.
This post has been really enlightening. I had no idea so many people felt so strongly about maintaining a safe space on a paintball field. Really goes to show how important it is to find a group of like minded players in this sport if you're really going to enjoy it over the years. Just as some of you feel that not having a safe space is damaging the sport, I feel that way about any sort of mandatory surrender rule for consenting adults. If I know there's a surrender rule, I don't go to that field... it literally ruins the game. Not because I like point blanking people, but because the situation is unavoidable and I'm not interested in such drama.Last edited by Siress; 07-11-2022, 10:03 PM.Paintball Selection and Storage - How to make your niche paintball part idea.

- Immediately replace any lens that has taken a direct hit from ten feet (three meters) or closer.
WARNING: Lens should be replaced after taking a direct hit or after a year of use, whichever comes first. Check lens prior to use. If any cracks or lines are present, the lens will need to be replaced. Failure to replace cracked lenses could cause loss of eyesight or death.

You can also not wear a seatbelt in the car while driving, not wear a life jacket while boating, or not wear hearing protection while around prolonged high sound pressure level exposure. You know, because it's a safe space if you do...

I recommend removing this gif as it's a bit graphic for any young readers. As for the rest, good day to you.

Daltech what mask do you use that’s got to be an expensive habit replacing your lens every time you play. If not you should always wear your seatbelt and use your swimys whenever you go in the water or mow your lawn. I agree

Fact is that surrender rules are NOT universal and I mostly found them at youngster oriented fields.
i like the rule, but there has always been misunderstandings around it because people think they know how it works based on what they played, and never listen to the rules.
the best rule is no surrender because there is no ambiguity. Only hits count.
it’s especially acceptable with stock class where no one takes a string of a dozen balls down the top of their mask or something.
but the only place I’d ever tell someone to surrender is where their surrender is mandatory if I meet several conditions like distance and dead to rights and stuff.
it gets tricky when it’s a bunker move that ends up being a mutual surrender yell off.

It’s important also to realize that these rules got developed in places where they were trying to defend their renters and noobs from sadists

In my experience, that's a fools errand for any field. If there are a lot of 'sadist' players, have them play as a separate group unto themselves. If there are only a few, help them correct their behavior or remove them from the field. No one wants to be in the business of assaulting kids, so it was easy to find people to help monitor and enforce corrective behaviors even if you're short staffed on refs.

This is why I always say there are two types of people who play paintball:
1. People who like to play paintball.
2. People who like to shoot other people.

If you don't like surrender rules, then don't get that close? The way I see it, when you walk onto that field, you are accepting the fact you can and will get shot. Sure offering a surrender is the honorable thing to do, especially to a new player, but the goal of the game is to tag the other team. Sneaking up on someone and catching them off guard is definitely fun and satisfying, but not necessary. As others have stated, a well placed shot on the pod pack will do. If you're that close it should be doable. Also, I feel like if you run up on someone that knows you're coming and shouting for a surrender is just going to get you shot. There's that whole fight or flight reaction to account for. Some people's reaction just happens to be to turn around and shoot. But its the risk that makes it so much more satisfying when you do get someone to surrender, and that's why we do it.
I don't know I just play for the fun of it. You don't have to be happy about getting eliminated (especially getting shot in the neck, or any other sensitive fleshy bits, nonody likes that. You should always try to learn from it. Will you try to surrender that way again? Probably not. Will you use better judgment before you try again? Definitely.

It’s just easy to lite people up, doing it doesn’t make you a better player. I don’t back shot people because it’s not hard to do it.
Look, from my perspective and from a sportsman’s view, OP won the duel and the other player was out when OP said surrender. The person who spun and shot him didn’t do something special or even honorable. If both players knew I bet OP would have marked him instead of surrendering. Paintballs not a macho tough guy sport, it’s just making it difficult to change the stigma of couch commandos and wannabe soldier of fortunes.
I’m basing this solely off of manufacturers suggestion. I use JT flex 7’s and DYE i5’s. I have spare lenses and have personally tested lenses, 200 balls and they don’t crack. The mirror finish pics away.
NXL, no surrender…
NPPL, no surrender…

It’s is safer then golf statistically. I’m assuming because people getting hit down on and alcohol playing a big part in that. Golf balls bounce off hard surfaces really well to and the players have zero safety protection. It’s also an older crowd so I’m sure that plays a part in more injuries. Only thing I can think of.
Paintballs hurt but they really don’t have much kinetic energy. Golf Ball/ Golf Club / Golf Cart on the other hand will really mess you up you get hit with one. Even at range.

Offering my two cents here, surrender rules need to be an absolute one way or the other. If someone shouts any of the usual phrases, I'm personally calling hit and walking off - they played better and I don't feel like risking the unpleasant but not horrifying prospect of a close range hit.
If surrender is an "offer", I'll offer none and accept none. You're getting shot, or I am.
Expecting someone to abide by an optional rule that they would feel is a "disadvantage" just doesn't happen these days. It might not be gentlemanly, but trying to find a middle ground merely leads to conflicts that no one will ever really walk away from happy, other than whoever didn't go out.
