    Worse then paint, plasti dip

So, ready for a horror story?

In my fixing and selling of markers I came across something new yesterday. I've dealt with plenty of painted bodies, they are a pain but manageable. Yesterday was plasti dip.

I would not put any of you through the pain of having to remove that crap

And the thing is I only had to get it off of the screw on forgrip extension for a spyder. It was like 3 inches of an expansion chamber that's all. Still took over half an hour.

It laughed at all the chemical solutions I threw at it, abrasives worked a bit but tended to move a lot of the plastic around rather than pick it up and since I wanted to keep the anno under the plastic I didn't really want to use abrasives anyway

I ended up having to soften it up a bit with acetone and then use a dental pick to scrape away at it tiny piece by tiny piece

I still have the rest of the body that was also dipped. Pretty sure that's going to be a write off. No way I'm spending a whole day getting it off

Normally PlastiDip comes off metal fairly easily. Just grab an edge and pull, but that usually only works for large areas.
If it was a nice marker, I'd try the dip removal spray. https://www.amazon.com/DipYourCar-Di...s%2C184&sr=8-5

For a Spyder, Goo Gone would be my first choice. Used that stuff to get sticker residue off a hopper and it started to eat the shell, left a matte finish on that spot.

Interesting... plastiDip usually just comes off in a peel or starts flaking off after a while.

I wonder if it's more like a Truck Bed Liner spray goo than plasti-dip.

That’s not plasti dip it wouldn’t hold up on a paintball marker. I bet it’s undercoating or bedliner.

If it means anything to you and you have some time, just set it in a super sunny spot for a couple of months. It will come right off. I agree with Seajay in that normally it just peels right off. A buddy of mine uses it on the front of his vette for race days to keep from getting chips and such and it takes very little effort to remove.

It works great for that the thicker it is the better it comes off.

Yup, he started out using this vinyl wrap stuff a whole lot the same as say something like the screen protector you put on your phone. It's pre-cut and just sticks on and peels off. The issue was that it also didn't protect very well so track debris (at speed) was damaging the nose and front of the hood. He found a red spray on that matches his paint so well that you can hardly tell it's there unless he leaves it for two races where it tends to fade to a more pink color. Keeps all the rubber, steel belt, rock, nuts/bolts/car parts type damage down.

          Hahaha! Couple months, you're funny

I'm in the Pacific Northwest. Not known for vast amounts of sunlight

Yeah now you guys got me wondering. It's not super thick like I would expect bed liner to be but it's also nowhere near pulling off in sheets

Not that I really care what it actually is, there's no way I'm going through the effort of getting it off the rest of the body

since its a spyder and its a home brew job, id assume its automotive undercoat, BUT, the cheap stuff does not hold up well. so its probably not that.

my $ is on truck bed liner. maybe the kid had an older brother (or sister) that did a DIY bed lining and had a little left over.

IF it is PlastiDip, I know one of the best ways to removed stubborn pieces is to spray a fresh layer of plastidip on top of it. The new layer will bind to the old stuff and pull it up.
