So I recently posted in the Want to Buy section looking for a Carter Buzzard. I think I want a Dye era example. However I do not fully understand the differences between the pre and post dye models. Can someone explain to me how Dye got involved with the company and what changes they made?

Compared to the Comps and Buzzards with dope slide triggers and such Pre Dye are more sought after, Over the dye era. They also bring more.
My old Dye Era Buzzard was pretty sweet but I still prefer the feel of my Pre Dye Comp personality the slide trigger was just too cool and smooth. Even the Pre Dye hinges are nicer IMO. They all shoot about the same it’s mostly a different feel. Pre Dye are more refined IMO.

Phantom is much more refined without a doubt. No denying it. You buy a Carter / Gargoyle because it’s unique. You want performance you buy a Phantom. I resprung it and polished it a lil and it shot well for me. But I haven’t found a SC marker that outperforms my VSC Phantom and I have a big SC collection.

Both of my Gargoyles won’t put out the numbers my Phantoms will. The Gargoyles just feels amazing in your hand and it’s rare / unique.
If we just compare performance the Phantom wins every time. But we all know there’s more to it than that.

Also worth mentioning....
Carter's newer stuff is hit and miss. I had to do a bunch of rework to make a modern comp even usable.

I feel like that’s Carter stuff in general. You take them apart you got to get them back together just right in order to work properly. It’s not simple like a phantom and the screws strip easy because they don’t use threaded inserts. But they are really cool custom pieces. I enjoy a good Carter

This was not the case with this comp....
For what ever reason he used thin stainless wire for the connection back to the bolt and it was bending wit every pump.

In my opinion it mostly depends how you like the trigger frames. Most people tend to love the pre-dye hinges they are really light and smooth as butter. The dye era mostly had 1.5 "fang" triggers that are a bit heavier on pull compared to the old-school hinges but still extremely smooth. The sliders are quite a bit rarer and a completely different feel as well. The Dye Era stuff is way more lienant on reassembly. You can pretty much slap it together and it will work. The pre-dye stuff can be finicky if you don't have everything aligned perfectly. I had a comp from 1991/92 that would auto trigger when you would pump it if you didn't have it together just right.
Here are the three I have owned:

That valve on the brown/black one looks awesome

The only Buzzard I still own. It avoids most of the design flaws that buzzards suffer from. The feedtube actually fits flush onto the marker because of the valve and it doesn't have a buzzard collar. It's quite a bit more compact than a regular buzzard, technically a mini-buzzard. The stock is even a bit shorter than standard!

Very cool. I actually didn't even notice the lack of a collar. Lol
