    Game Variants

During the time I have played I have played many different variants of games, capture the flag and elimination being the most common for rec play but I was curious to see what game variants others have played and what is their favorite? I will try and list all variants here. If two teams are required i will try and stick with red vs blue and will typically have red defending and blue attacking. Most games the respawn varies between one, two or more lives and the standard repawns are a player must go to their base or designated area and touch, wait or perform something to respawn, when the base is involved then the game is usually over when it is no longer viable to respawn if a games follows this rule for respawn i will state: Respawn Varies.. Almost all games can and sometimes will be turned to elimination if the objective is forgotten.
Capture the Flag: Two apx even teams are set up on opposite ends of the field and a flag is set in the center, the winning team will capture the flag in the center and bring it back to their base. Respawn varies Variations include: Each team has their own flag and must capture the other teams flag, the flag is hung from a pole in the center and must be raised, captains where only the team captain can grab the flag,
Citadel / Alamo / ? red team protects their base / flag from blue team and blue team must capture the base or flag to win normally timed and after x time red wins. Respawn Varies
Elimination: Even teams that attempt to eliminate the other team respawn varies but is usually limited
Medic / Medics: similar to elimination but 1 or more medics traverse the field sometime armed other times not and only those medics can revive someone, "killed / injured" players are normally required to stay in place and the medic must come to them. Medic respawn varies but is typically 0 respawns.
Hostage Rescue: a dummy, player or bystander is placed in the control of red team and red team must hide their hostage and protect them from blue team, red team wins if blue eliminates the hostage or time expires, blue team wins if they evacuate the hostage from blue base, get the hostage to their base or get the hostage off the map. Works best with each team using different paint.
Superman / Terminator/ Achilles: One or more players are designated superman, Achilles or terminators and typically they have a unlimited hits and are only killed by calling themselves out, the rest of the players have to respawn, respawn varies. Achilles can only be killed by calling themselves out or being hit in a designated area.
Freeze Tag: Elimination but kills result in players being frozen in place and if same team touches player they respawn in place, if other team touches then player is eliminated. typically unlimited respans but can be limited if required.
Heros vs Villians/ Wild West / Cops and robbers: Blue team enters an area that red team have trapped and must eliminate all red team in this area typically red far out numbers blue, respawns vary, quite often respawn is based on time sometime red or blue will respawn in place with set action ie medic or freeze tag.
Civil / Revolutionary war: In its one form players line up with a single round in the chamber and must fire at the opposing team who is lined up opposite of them, with one round as well, shooting is sometimes red first then blue then back to red till one team is eliminated, sometimes a general controls the action for red or blue, sometimes it is reload and fire. Reloading can be ball in the front of the marker and pushed down using a squeegee, or breech opened and ball placed in the breech. Sometime reloading can be standard but limited to stock class. There are many forms of this that involve respawns, reloads and how the teams meet. (general is immortal but can only call shot, general can call and direct shoots, be killed but after that teams can retreat or fire at will general less team must still follow firing protocol.
Gauntlet: typically used for birthdays and punishment, one - all of the players are invited to form a line the birthday person or offending person must run along this line and back while being shot for birthdays slower rate of fire markers are recommended, for punishment amount of laps depends on crime.
Spy Vs Spy: Each team has a spy, the spy is the only way for players to be eliminated outside of spawn base elimination. If a spy is caught he must return to his base to respawn and can attempt to make it back to the other teams side to eliminate more, respawn is typically unlimited and at base. Like in almost all games eliminated players can not talk.
Knife variants of a lot of these where a player has a "knife" and only knife kills eliminate all other kills can be respawned.
We called it black knighting but in any game format you can continue on if you yell "Tis But a Scratch!!" and quit using that body part eyes, arm, leg, hand, marker, hopper, etc, this is better for a game amongst friends and does not work with walk ons all the time.
I remember a ghost one where killed players could and were encouraged to talk but I do not remember the rest of the rules and think i may have only played that in a speedball setting that was more practice then actual game variant.

After I wrote most of this out it looks very familiar like either i wrote this out before or it was written out before and i am rewriting it, Maybe it was on MCB 1.0 or 1.5 or this version of MCB, if it is here please let me know and i will delete this. .

TLDR : What is your favorite game variant and how is it played?

About 10 years ago I played a game on a Wild West themed field at Off Limits paintball in Louisiana.

One team defended a bank building and another team had to run up and hit a simulated dynamite plunger to blow up the vault or something. It was interesting, the field was fairly detailed, and the game itself was light hearted and fun.

Personally I enjoy the smaller playing fields that typically see 10v10 games or smaller, especially when they have oddball themes or setups.

Big games are fun but they can easily turn into fairly static front lines where you get shot by a couple dozen different people if you move out of cover.

We call this game "Kings and Jacks" but really only because you draw cards at the start to assign roles. Two sets of suited cards are made up with a king, a jack, and as many other cards as there are players. I recommend 6 v 6 at a minimum.

Kings are announced before the game. If your king dies, your team loses. They otherwise can play like any other player, keeping an eye out for suspicious activity.

Jacks are not announced; they are double agents that try to kill anyone on their colored team other than the king.

Everyone else are basic soldiers, defending their king while not totally sure who is going to betray them... Or who their agent is on the other side.

Usually played on a smaller field, it would probably scale well to larger fields.

Normally the Jack would not announce their role until they felt secure enough to do so, or they had weakened the king's defense enough for a push. You can also bar the Jack from announcing their role if you wish.

It is not for everyone, but we have had some great times playing like that.

Back in the day when I played nearly 100% at this renegade field in my buddies woods, I would get together with a few close friends and we'd agree to create a secret third team. So we'd shoot everybody except each other, but with our "real" team mates, we'd have to make it either look like we were the opposite arm band, or like accidental friendly fire.

We used to piss people off pretty badly with that. It was hilarious.

I've been playing paintball for 25-ish years and Team Fortress 2 (TF2) for 13-ish years. TF2 has variants called:

      - Payload, where one team has to push a mining cart with a bomb in it along a set route, hitting checkpoints along the way and wins when the payload is pushed into the enemy spawn and blows up their base. Both teams respawn.

      - Payload Race - Which is the same format, but both teams have mining carts

I've always wanted to try this in paintball with one or two "Little Red Wagon's" or something similar loaded down with a heavy and bulky object so its hard to move.

I've played something similar. There's a weighted jerry can in the middle of a field and each team tries to bring it to the other's base. I've seen something similar done on a larger field with a shopping cart.

I like the idea of this in paintball but think the track would be a must since it forces one path and defenders could setup to protect that path.

Jacks game- “Birthday Ball” Everyone starts with 10 paintballs. In the middle of the field a 10 round tube is placed. You can make the dash for the extra 10 shots Or choose to battle it out with the 10 shots. It makes for some super fun game. It’s a lot of cardio and good laughs.

We get together every year in memory of Jack and play it. It’s always a great time.

My favorite is one that our Fallen Brother Splattttttt came up with called Birthday Ball. How it's played is Stock Class Tournament style with no tanks or hoppers allowed,10 rounds in the marker only,no reload tubes aside from one 10 round tube at the middle of the field that whomever gets to it first can use it any way they want.Typically it's 2 teams of either 3v3,5v5,or 7v7 ,Total elimination, and a 5 minute time limit. It's pretty intense and a lot of movement.

capitalpaintball does a fun Easter game. You get a bunch of big plastic eggs and put 10 paintballs in each of them. No one starts with any paint, you have to find the eggs to battle. Rest of the game is just elimination. It's a fun limited paint variant.

Used to be a field near me that had an Easter game like that. And if you shot the bunny you got to keep his gun. Had lots of giveaways too. Fun times. Still bug my buddy about winning a camo moo moo (rain poncho).

At a long gone field we used to play a game variant at the end of the day that was a lot of fun. Players played in pairs, and would be sent out on the field. Once a player was eliminated they would wait at the staging area for a second player, and then they’d head out together hunting other players. So you never sat out long and ended up playing with a bunch of different people. It was a great way to play.

Sounds like a ton of fun, actually.... great way to get new players settled in and used to playing, too.

        Wally ball

Best played on an indoor, urban environment, or an urban field with lots of objects close together or a decent sized building with lots of rooms and preferably (but not necessarily)one larger open area, with or without air bunkers in it.

2 teams, each team has a flag and one player designated the "respawn queen"

Flags are placed on opposite sides of the larger open area if it's available or on roughly opposite sides of the halfway point of the field (left side 50, right side 50)

Players MUST remain within arms reach of a wall at all times unless dead and going to respawn. The respawn queens only job is to tag players back in. If the respawn queen is shot out, they are out and any respawn ability is lost for that team

This format is great, as a team you have to decide between how many players to protect your respawn queen/flagand how many to send for the flag/other teams respawn queen.

I enjoyed how APE did zombies about 16 years ago:
there were a set amount of zombies to start, and they can only be killed by headshot. If a zombie is shot in the leg, they had to drag the leg. If you got shot in the arm, you couldn't use it anymore until you go back to a respawn. The live players had 2 or 3 medics, and you had 2 lives and mostly had to hold the bunker (for the local players, that bunker used to be sick. It wasn't overgrown and busted down back then, and it played awesome.) Once the players lives are expended, they walked to the nearest zombie respawn and became one. It was super fun, and I haven't seen another zombies game held this way since.

Sounds like a great game. I like games that keep players playing as much as possible. Better than ye old lazy attack and defend games

When I first started playing 30 years ago we always played outlaw at the same place. There was a sand pit on one end and a valley with a trail down the middle running through the rest of the field.

We’d play a game we called president. 2 or 3 people were snipers depending on how many people we had, 1 person was the president, and the rest were parade participants. The snipers would go out and hide then the rest of the people and president would go to the sand pit and walk along the trail like it was a parade. The snipers has to kill the president.

We used to play a game we called “Predator”

It was a 1v all game. The Predator got a semi or electro with “unlimited” paint and everyone else got Eagle Talons with a couple 10 round tubes and a 12gram or 2 (that part I can’t remember well, but it was limited paint and limited air)

The Predator then went into the woods and hid….from
there it was a straight “search and destroy” style game.

Fox and the Hound (requires a large field or you can play across "tape lines")
A smaller group (usually the better players) are designated "foxes" and get to go hide wherever they see fit prior to the game starting. A larger group are designated "hounds" and didn't get to see where the foxes hid, they all start at the same end of the field and go hunt them down (preferably making hound noises as they go).
Should be something like a 1:3 ratio. Super fun and strategic game.

Kill Confirmed from call of dooty. A free for all game where players are issued (random) playing cards at the spawn location. When hit, a player drops their card in the spot they were eliminated, and they return to the spawn point for another card and respawn. Points are awarded for each card retrieved. You can play on a time limit or card count goal. Great game for rec play, with limited amount of additional props and easy to understand rules for casuals.

That sounds fun. So if you are shot do you drop all the cards you have collected or just one from your current "life"?
