    Yelling "Get Out!" in Rec-ball

Something that's always been present in the 14 years I've been playing is that some people treat rec-ball like there's money on the line. The way this manifests that bothers me the most is not carrying half a case out to a walk-on game or throwing ropes at renters, it's shouting "Get Out!" the moment you see you hit (or think you hit) a player. (Or "Get out, player!" or "Get him out! Get him out, ref!" etc.) No one has the reaction time to call themselves out as soon as a ball breaks anywhere on them, and how do they know without checking if it actually broke?

When I was starting out I would call myself out as soon as I felt any impact but that often led to me needlessly exiting the field when I had just caught a couple bounces. Now if I feel a hit I duck back into cover and check myself for breaks before I call anything.

Yelling at someone to "get out" ruins the vibe of rec-ball for me. We're all there to have fun. I want to be able to laugh about it with anyone who shoots me. Shouting at players like that is basically accusing them of cheating when they are still reacting to the hit. It always seems to be the tourney guys that end up doing this too and it must come from that culture. I've never played tourney paintball but I know that cheating is common and this attitude must be part of that game. I just wish it would stay there.

I sometimes call for players to check themselves if I saw I hit them in a harder to notice area like a hopper, pack, or leg. "Check your ." But that's it. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

What do you think? Is this kind of thing innocuous and I'm just being overly sensitive? Do people do this at your field? (For the record I can't actually think of a time someone yelled at me to get out, but I've seen plenty of it out on the field in walk-on and big games and it grinds my gears every time)

I agree with your perspective. If I see some hit I ask them to check wherever. If I am hit and unsure I’ll call “check” to let the know felt it, but unsure if it broke. If I’m out I call hit and usually complement the shooter on a nice shot, especially if it’s a renter. Screaming for someone to get out is rarely necessarily.

Few things made me chuckle more when I was reffing walk on games than calmly telling someone angrily shouting at me to get someone out that they had to hit them first.

Yeah, the time and place for that isn’t rec games. Not really tournaments either.

No argument from me. Calmly asking a player to check themselves is one thing (but not expecting them to do so) or asking a ref. to check what you think is an OBVIOUS hit is one thing but the yelling at players or refs is IMHO completely unacceptable. Even when I was regularly refereeing tournaments (over 10 years ago) if players did the "check him", "get out"....etc. my standard was to paint check the yeller first before ever attempting the "target".

On the one hand I hate it and it ruins the vibe. On the other hand it helps to identify the try-hards who heed
to be shot out every game so they realize they aren’t that good and shut their fat mouths.

I try to do the "check your XXX player!" versus GET OUT, but sometimes when you are playing against people who are clearly cheating it's all too easy to stoop to that level. Rage = yelling.

For me, it really depends on the situation; are you playing recball with some buddies and/or skilled players OR are you mixing in with walk-on newbies and rentals? The GET OUT has no place when playing with newbies, you gotta be the adult and be patient with them or they aren't going to want to come back and play again.

I like ironically using GET OUT when I'm playing with my crew, but that's far more tongue-in-cheek than anything.

TLDR - I hate it, stop yelling at children.

At Hell Survivors big games there’s always someone accusing someone of wiping from 220 feet away in moderate cover and significant shade, something I can’t imagine being able to verify. Their endless angry screaming very much harshes my buzz.

"GEDDDDOOOOOWWT" is the mating call of the toxic tween agglet. Whenever an agglet pulls it's trigger, a primal force compels it to squeal out "geddowwwwwwt," often before the ball even gets across the field. It's important to know that the agglet doesn't actually need to be given any more regard than you would give to someone else's malfunctioning car alarm - it's just an autonomous response that happens when a child that's usually screaming slurs in CoD lobbies finds it's way outside and encounters humans IRL.

I agree with you 100% - there's no reason a decent human should scream ANYTHING immediately after shooting at someone. Give the player enough time to do the right thing. If they're taking their time, send another short burst at them. Maybe the first one bounced. Maybe they can't find the first hit. If they haven't signaled an elimination, another quick burst is not bonus-balling.

And yeah, if there is a plainly visible hit on a hopper or a pod, then conversation is OK, but there's sill no reason to ever say "Get out." Like you said, "check your hopper" is helpful.

EDIT: I just thought of the perfect way to explain this to someone.

Yelling "Get out" immediately is equivalent to sitting at a red light with your hand resting on your horn so that you can can honk the very millisecond the light turns green - intentionally before a human can move their foot from the brake to the gas, much less safely accelerate. The world would be better off if these people just didn't go out in public.

This, exactly, is what's turning me off of rec paintball.

I'm at the point where, if I'm not (only) playing with a group of people I know, I would prefer to simply do something else.
And God turned to Gabriel and said: “I shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

This reinforces my desire to convince my wife to leave the tax haven of Texas for the tax haven of New Hampshire. That, and the fact that here, when the kids are out of school, it's too hot to set foot outside.

It's tough with there being what? 10 of us? All spread out over several hundred km.

I don't see people screeching get out that much up here.

There's a dude at my local field who does this. He's also the type who brings a full 4+5 pod pack and uses ramping vs rentals. I swear some people would be better off spending their money on therapy...

This happened the other day. The renter beside me got hit and called out (rather meekly). He then put his barrel plug in and took a few seconds to figure out where he had to go. All the while the guy who shot him out (who I believe works there) was screaming for him to get out. Admittedly yes the guy took a while to get up and walk out, but for all the other guy knew he could have been checking himself. He wasn't playing on or in the way of anyone. Tbh even if he were playing on it wasn't worth making as big a fuss as the guy did. Oh and when the renter did walk out the guy who shot him gave him the old "Yeah, get out" sneer that pisses me off more than the screaming.

Overly sensitive maybe. It’s a tactic use in speedball to distract the refs, get the ref to birddog a players possession or sometimes push a player out of cover when checking for “the shot”. Also it keeps an opponent stationary while checking. Depending on the refs experience sometimes you can use his body as cover when he goes in for a check to take field position. It rattles and interrupts a player throwing off the games rhythm. Pros play the refs as much as the other team.

It gets carried over to Rec ball by inexperienced speedball players and try hards. It has no place in Rec. But I get why people do it having played in many different areas. The paintball culture is vastly different depending on location played. Anyone that has played close to NYC or in North NJ knows what I’m talking about. It’s different paintball.

Exactly this. The guy I mentioned in my post above carries his tournament mentality into every game. That attitude is the very reason I quit tourney ball and switched to pump.

That makes sense. Especially the part about rattling the other player, clearly I am rattled. If I'm out on my day off for chill day of rec ball I prefer other players not try to get in my head, though. There's enough dumb stuff in there as it is.

No I get that totally. There is tactics behind why people do that though was more my point. Rec should be about every one having fun game. The people in rec doing that are just blindly following others. Often new players to competitive play that think that’s how they are supposed to act because others do that. But there is a reason and if they knew the reason they wouldn’t use it in Rec.

Try it sometime randomly make an odd noise in the presence of others you frequent like work. In a few days they will start doing it subconsciously back. I do it at work all the time just to see how many people I can get to make a stupid noise. You would be surprised how it not only catches on but how many do it subconsciously.

No, only GEDDDDOOOOWWT works. I just realized that we've been getting this all wrong. They weren't being obnoxious at all.

Look at how tight their little yoga pants are. They're not screaming at other players - this is just a lifetime of rage and frustration boiling over.

They're screaming at their un-descended testes to finally GET OUT so they can grow a pair and play paintball.

I will admit I am guilty of the occasional "Oooooh Check yourself" but like Johnny said above razzing friendly players is one thing. Sometimes I'm also just as surprised I made the shot as the other guy is

Chuck is also is 100% right it rubs off on other players. I was playing a rec game very recently which happened to NOT be with the rest of the typical New England crew, was a private game with 99% rentals and a few that had played before. One "experienced" player was very much dumping pods of paint, calling out his shots, asking the refs to check, etc etc. In one game late in the day, I make a bad call on a bunker pick. One of the first time newbies had me dead to rights and bounced a few off my dump pouch. Then as I was checking it broke one on my shoulder. I call myself hit and as I'm walking out to the dead box he says "How many times do I have to hit you bro?" Wow what?!?!?! That dude had never played before, had no reason to be that way and "bro" me. I was playing pump limited paint in a sea of new players for funzies, I clearly was hosed in the spot I was in. We weren't playing for a million dollars.

But he saw other people doing it and thought they were the cool kids. For the most part it was an awesome game and a lot of fun but the aggro does spread quick. I guess it is a reminder to be a good example...
