    Pre-Game Rituals

What do you do before a day of paintball?

I get everything ready night before, next morning make food for the family before my hour + long drive while they're all still asleep. I hit up McDonald's for breakfast (awful I know) then listen to a new episode of my favorite podcast on the drive. This has become the ritual.

I also get everything ready the night before. That generally includes 1 or more guns that I have no idea if they work or not, and at least 1 I know works.

1gal water jug partially full of water into the freezer to finish filling in the morning so I have cold water all day. A mason jar with some kind of snack mix.

Ride to the field usually involves a podcast and/or call to my family back in VT.

As much ready the night before as I have energy to do so I can throw the pile of forgotten things in in the morning.

Stretch and drink lots of water when I get there

Pee after the first 3 games

Find a new player having marker problems and sit down to fix their marker

      Eat lunch

Convince myself to go play a few more games so I can feel like I got my money's worth for the day

I am not sure what it means to "shit down", but you might be turning off some new players with that technique.

Stress the night before, getting equipment ready. Stop at the local gas station for snacks and gateraid. Stress getting to the field wondering what I have forgotten. get signed in, stretch and get stressed about being ready for the first game. Stress my marker won’t chrono properly, skip out the first game to get ducks in a row, finally get on the field.

Usually end up enjoying myself and just go with the flow. Sit out the odd game, switch marker, bs with other players.

it’s more stressful when you’re lending gear to people and you have to make sure it works for them.

I get stressed also. I don't know why it is a thing. I've never had a completely bad day of paintball. I do know that our pump group is going to put me to the test, but that's where the good games are.

Get stuff ready the day/night before and load the vehicle. Morning of get up, make coffee, drink said coffee while watching something stupid on YouTube. Go to my favorite breakfast joint and have steak and eggs, drive to field.

Pack everything up the night before. Wake up early to drive there and depends on where I am, it could be 1 hour to the field or 4 hours.

stop at a superstore and get snacks and lunch and water and treats.

get to the field unload and set up and then get my gear on.

        Stretch for 15-/+ minutes.

I do however miss the early drive and energy drinks and then energy drinks all day at the field.

This year I've been trying to keep my equipment on deck at all times so if the mood strikes, or I suddenly have some free time, off I go. When I get home I wash my gear, and pack it at the ready.

That hasn't prevented me from forgetting essentials, but neither did going over everything the night before. I'm an ADHD case.

Having a field 25 mins away and getting a membership this year helped a lot. I haven't played this much in probably 12 years.

                1. Check and pack my gear the night before, after putting my 5 year old to bed. Usually I have cleaned and lubed my markers sometime since the last time I played (generally monthly), most often earlier that week. Tell myself I will not be up to some ungodly hour teching on markers, not this time.
                2. Also the night before, popping over to the nearby grocery store for several Powerades and maybe a couple snacks, and picking up some fruit and croissants to leave my family for breakfast. Then around back there's an automated ice dispenser where I'll buy a bag to fill up my cooler. Head back home and tell myself I will not be up to some ungodly hour teching on markers.
                  1. Somewhere in the process of these first three, I might decide to bring along an older marker to play with for nostalgia or to loan out, or just in case the first three markers I try using all suddenly develop an issue. So I air it up to check it out and, well, you know where this is going. If I manage to avoid doing this, I might actually have a shot at a sane bedtime.
                3. Load the car the night before, keeping any paint inside the house if it is going to be particularly hot or cold overnight, otherwise it gets loaded too. And more often than I would like, look at my watch and swear at myself for being up at some ungodly hour the night before paintball, again.
                4. Morning of, I do floor stretches while putting on my knee pads and socks. Never for long enough, though. I get impatient to get on the road. Add an Aleve to my meds.
                5. Hit up Dunkin' for a breakfast sandwich to eat on my way to the field. This is a paintball day only thing for me. My field doesn't break for lunch and there's no food nearby anyway, so I tend to front load the calories.
                6. Listen to podcasts for most of the 40 minute drive, then switch to my paintball music playlist a few minutes out. I almost always listen to "King of Nothing" by Adventure Club. That song was used to great effect in the video for the 2022 Castle Jam.
                7. Temporarily change my Facebook profile pic to one of me playing and post a status update checking in at my local field. If we want to keep the sport alive and see it grow, we have to promote our fields.

Just remembered my zeroth ritual: Once I've nailed down which Saturday I am playing that month, I post about it on Facebook about a week or two ahead of time. I make a point of saying something to the effect of "If you're interested in playing but hesitant to just show up alone, you can expect to see me there and I'm always happy to answer questions at the field and online." I've generally given up trying to invite specific people on specific weekends, so instead I just put it out there that anyone is welcome to reach out.

In the past I've frequently brought loaner setups and my unfortunate ritual is often (1) Disorganization (2) Panic (3) forgetting stuff

                    - Pack in a hurry even though I’d been packing for a week.
                    - Grab a Bang, usually the Unicorn one
                    - Listen to the entire Immortal Technique - The Martyr album.
                    - Continue driving… (no fields are very close)
                    - Unpack & realize I forgot something important

                      • Wake up super early with plenty of time to spare
                      • Lose track of time and leave late
                      • Grab a dozen sugar Ds for the crew
                      • Have the coffee hit the minute I get on the highway and have to pull over to poo in the woods
                      • Massive anxiety surge as I'm pulling into the field and contemplate giving up paintball for crocheting
                      • Have an absolute blast and get hyped up for next weekend
                      • Listen to a spooky podcast on the way home
                      • Cheeseburger
                      • Clean and pack whatever gear I'm using next week
                      • Wonder how many 10 rd tubes I lost at the field

iamthelazerviking I've been a fan of the Nosleep Podcast for a while. Often it's kind of corny, but that can be fun. It ranges in quality, but there's usually at least one story per week that is really good. In the past I've also enjoyed Tanis, and a spattering of Let's Not Meet. I've had a few other ones that started decently, but either had a shitty ending or they just kind of lost focus so I'm hesitant to recommend those. I'll dig back in my history and let you know if there are any other good ones. I love scary stories so 95% of the podcasts I listen to are some type of spooky.

Jonnydread very cool. I've been listening to Last Podcast on the Left for a while, humor mixed with dark spooky. And SPOOKED is pretty good.
