what could your local fields do better?

I'll start. The place I ref and play at could use more frequent grass cutting and weed eating, much faster turn around between games in open play, and do chrono checks in open play more often.

I try to push for the changes in open play but I have to balance pushing those practices onto the open play ref and not becoming the annoying co-worker that everyone hates

    #2
This is probably contentious. My local field fills up your tanks w/ HPA and no check on the hydro date. Any old tank gets filled. This practice is no doubt welcomed by most of the players...until there is an accident with a tank out of hydro.

As a player returning from the 90s, I agree...people have gotten way too cavalier about tank safety. At the field I was at recently they just let anyone walk up to the air-fill station and use it. While I did find this convenient I was also like "whoa, what's going on here??" As in, no one was inspecting tanks and anyone could fill any tank they wanted to. To me this seemed like a bad thing.

That’s common practice outside of very specific states. Massachusetts and New Hampshire are ones that come to mind. But the majority of states I have traveled to play at are self fill HPA. Hydro is checked at the beginning of the day if at all.

They could have a better (or an actual) understanding of the 2" rule for CO2 tanks, as well as proper skills at filling CO2 tanks.

I haven’t had an issue after showing the field in black and white. I haven’t been told I can’t use my equipment and it wasn’t an issue after I pointed it out and showed them on
the official website. Most don’t know, Some are just looking to sell gear.

You haven't met the owner of Jaegers. I printed off the DOT requirements for him and he refused to look at them or read them. Just kept repeating that my tank was too old. I think I told him they were "just like him then" and waited until he wasn't looking and got a ref who actually knew the rules to fill them up.

Hell Survivors could use more people period. Bigger tougher refs who can confidently do their job. They could use a working big red at the gun range instead of a half broken handheld thing with dead batteries or sometimes nothing at all. I wish they were more safety focused.

But honestly compared to some of the stuff I’ve seen talked about I’d still say it’s one of the world’s top destinations.

Fill in the cracks in the bunkers on non-woodsball fields. Encourage/incentivize refs to be more aggressively present in the game.

Gaps in bunkers really pisses me off. I understand that it's a lot of work to setup a decent paintball field. But when half the bunkers are missing wooden slats, and they're within 15 yards of each other, those are not suitable cover.

My local field is one of the bigger fields in Canada.

My biggest complaints are paint quality and time between games.

Regardless of time of year, the paint is a 6/10. The refs announce the time until the next game, but it's a running joke that 5 minutes actually means 15.

I would also like to see some field variance as its a similar map routine every weekend.

There are positives, though. Usually a decent turnout, a good mix of owners/renters, food, bathrooms with actual plumbing. The refs that run walk ons are usually on it, too. Rarely do I have issues with over shooting or shooting hot, bad attitudes, etc.

Agreed. Would be nice if they did some of the further out fields even if only one. Also change up some of the game modes.

The 2 most local fields to me are practically polar opposites.
The good one is well staffed, well maintained, and fields are even updated and added sometimes. All the structures are maintained for safety, and the refs are on point with safety while still being friendly. Wouldn't change a thing there

The bad one, well the last time I went there, the fields were overgrown, they have string lines from marking boundaries on old scenarios littering the ground just begging to snag your foot as you run by. The structures are decaying and grown in with thorns. The last big scenario I went to there (it's their most popular game all year by far) was a nightmare. Not enough staff, I didn't see any refs checking chrono at all, and one or some individuals snuck in some riot rounds and were shooting players with them. One of these victims almost had a broken hand from a riot round. Their air system is dirty and is underpowered, so getting a fill over 2k is tough. At least they knew this and hired a truck for their bigger events now. During that same scenario, my team was playin a structure that was actually working to our advantage to get to our objective, when a ref comes over and tells us we have to abandon said structure because it was unsafe. It wasn't discussed in the pre game briefing. The building wasnt marked in anyway to stay out. That whole day was a shut out loss for my team, and they did nothing to try to balance the teams. This event is big for them, with players of all ages coming out to play, and they got stomped on by the team they stacked with agro speedball players. Walk on days there arent much better. Ive had refs that didnt even know the fields. Ask where the spawn is in a respawn game, they have no clue. This place definitely feels like the kind of field where you're paying for a professional field experience, and are in fact just playing outlaw.

Reffing in general. Don't be a hard ass but make sure players aren't shooting hot, try to make even teams and give a good run down or the rules. Be kind but firm.

Cousin's takeover of Skyline in Virginia has been great. I have told them this before, but they need to have refs explain to open play groups that yes there are people with their own gear who might look scary then address those scary pro looking dudes and remind them it's not world cup and to take it easy on the new players.

I’d just like a local field. Closest field to me closed couple years back. And now second closest fields closing this year.

closest field now will be 1+hr away

I hear that. We have one local field that's decent, but there are very few walk-ons. The next closest halfway decent field is about 1.25 hours away, but there are lots of excellent fields if you're willing to drive 2-3 hours.

Splat action = basically everything. Nobody checked any Chrono speed at any point in the day, masks off on the field, we had to ref our own speedball games because the refs were basically not interested. No checking hydro dates. I've heard other horror stories but all the above was first hand

Impact action= better but not perfect. Last time I was there, nobody checked Chrono but that was the first time I've had that happen. Nobody checks hydro dates.

Oregon supergame (yearly event) = nearly perfect. Game management could be better. The final battle is a known outcome every year and it would be nice if that's more of a contested game.

Extreme velocity= really good. More frequent Chrono checks are about all, refs have always been good

Doodlebug Sportz field (Everett WA): About all I can say is (as far as I could tell at least) there was no one checking hydro dates on tanks and some of the bunkers are a bit ratty. Also the field-grade paint was at best a 4/10; no joke, I had a ball come out of my barrel and hook 90 degrees straight up. I was legit worried it would fly over the netting.

Otherwise it was great; the refs were friendly and knew their stuff, check-in was a breeze, the staging area was well-appointed, bathrooms were clean and I have to admit the self-serve air fill stations were convenient. Even if the idea does weird me out a bit.

The first time I ran into self serve air it threw me as well. It seems to have become more common, but I still have some reservations about it.

Jonnydread same my dude, same. On the one hand its great for convenience, and I'm responsible about hydro dates. On the other hand some people aren't, and that vaguely worries me. Granted, modern air tanks are over-engineered to hell and gone but still...there are big-time reasons why we have so many safety rules about tanks.

Yeah I've noticed in the last decade or so more fields going to self serve air. Maybe it's a pnw thing? I'm down around Portland and there's only 1 field that is not self serve.

Staffing is my guess, but it also tends to create lazy fields that don't check hydro either.

Strangely enough, Oregon supergame is self serve air but also religious about checking hydro dates. I'm pretty convinced they are the sole reason why there's not a lot more out of date tanks being used in my area
