What makes your perfect day of paintball

So we all know any day paint balling is better than a day working.

But as many know there’s just some days and things that just seem to click and it’s the perfect day. What is it for you that makes the day (Great paint, playing well, winning, camaraderie, laughs, equipment etc.)?

I know for me, some days I can’t hit the broadside of a barn and others it seems i do ever so slightly better lol. But winning and doing well ish never seem to stand out to me (maybe cause it rarely happens). To me though I t’s the memorable stories of the game the laughs the joy of the excitement. The surprising triumphs and the epic fails. The stuff you still recall decades later and still brings smiles when you tell them.

Playing my first game and being the last player remaining on my team and just the feeling of impending doom trying to fight off my attackers, Deciding to try and run for a flag capture and having to drop my gun to hold my damn pants up (fat guy problems). My first game back after major injury and realization that I can still enjoy this if just a bit more limited. Meeting great like minded folk who play honestly and just out to have fun. No egos and screaming. Just good old fashioned fun laughs camaraderie and stories.

So what say you? What makes your perfect day of paintball.

I’ve had that problem with my pants too. They’re just too small and the button pops open at bad times. I used hockey sock tape to keep them up now! I need to stop being cheap and buy a nice pair that fit.

As for my perfect day, comradely is a big one. Been hitting the field solo lately and meet some nice local guys with good attitudes. Makes playing a lot more fun. Even get recognized at the field by staff and they ask what weird markers I brought to play with.

I also like when I get some nice skill elimination, good shots that were challenging to make and trying to be more aggressive and challenge myself. Don’t care if I get taken out, but like to get to that aggressive edge to push myself… as long as my pants stay up.

Good attitudes and intense snap battles. I’m lucky enough to have a group of players that play hard but are goofy and friendly. Nothing better than high fiving the dude that one balled you through 2 windows and vice versa.

Also shenanigans. Paintball at its heart is a silly game and I like when folks lean into that.

No equipment issues, no fogging and game play that makes me smile and laugh even when I am not actually playing well. I enjoy having fun and paintball is best when it is fun.

Paint that shoots straight and a good group that wants to play the same kind of paintball.

That generally sums it up for me as well. It's gotta be all fun.

A good turnout, good attitudes, memorable plays & events, and plenty of laughs on and off the field.

Weather that isn't trying to broil or smother me.

Decent turnout, including both my buddies from outside paintball who play and the field regulars I enjoy playing with. Along with a healthy crop of renters with whom we can share our love of the game, of course.

Memorable playing experiences. Playing at the same field each month, games start to blur together a bit. So when something really cool or really crazy or funny or weird or whatever happens, it's nice to make memories that stand out. Whether that means epic wins or epic failures doesn't really matter all that much.

One thing I have learned about myself as a player: I am happiest when there's that voice in the back of my head going "(chuckles) I'm in danger." Making it into a great spot and slicing up the other team is always a lot of fun, but it's even more fun when you are also aware that you're exposed on one side and sooner or later they're going to figure that out and come get you. Those tend to be my flow state moments, when I'm stuck in a tough spot and having to live behind my gun. Often the most exhilarating moments in paintball are those you play in the moments before getting run down.

The Automag: Not as clumsy or random as an electro. An elegant marker for a more civilised age.

The wife actually not caring I'm gone all day. The weather being in the 60s-70s partly cloudy. The paint being good quality, asking a lot I know.

There are two types of days that I really enjoy.

First is super laid back with a group of friends. My bachelor party was a good example of this; all of my close friends and family, most of which had never played before. (not having to organize the games and gear helps immensely here). Not having to play hard, being goofy and prioritizing fun and not winning. That's a great day.

The second is the complete reverse; a competitive day where I'm able to play well, without feeling like I'm just unfairly running people over. Where it's a big challenge, but I'm able to succeed. The most recent time I played was the perfect example; I played mech against tourney guys, got killed fast for the first handful of points. Finally found a good spot on the field and started getting 2-3-4 kills every game. This one's a lot harder to come by though; you either do well and have a good day, or you get run over and have a really bad day. I love having a day like this every now and then, but going after a day like this and I start to burn out pretty quick.

Weather tends not to be a huge concern to me; I've played in snow, rain, blistering heat. Obviously I prefer not to be in the extremes, but if it's a good day the weather won't affect it. Bad paint will easily ruin my day but I haven't had that problem in years. I think the last time I shot actually bad paint was back in ~2018 at Fort Hood. To me, a good day will be a good day regardless of these factors.
