Let's go down a rabbit hole together

So earlier today I was talking with martix_agent who sent me the most peculiar CL ad:

In case it gets taken down, and for prosperity, here's everything

    Infra-Red Paintball Marker & Israeli night vison - $799

I bought out the Warrior manufacturer in Oregon. Made 140 changes, and now it is in the top five best pumps ever made. I got the active Israeli Infra-Red googles, which can see in pitch black. Custom batteries are on eBay or can be made. At Westworld, AZ, players had to guide me to a shooting position. Many do not go out in night games. One guy was hit, but I lit up his googles to the point of him having to leave. Freight by UPS is about $30.

    That's all

So. First impression is, nutball. But here's where things get odd, this is from Guy Cooper, who apparently owns ProStar paintball.

Odd enough for a company owner to make such a rambling cl post but then Martix also stumbled across this

Welcome to the World Paintball Library. Paintball's largest collection of related media.

Apparently, at some point Guy decided to start collecting paintball media and has quite the list of historical stuff.

I'm sure I have a thousand questions but I'm not even sure where to start with this.

Love how the nightvision box says "DO NOT OPEN IN LIGHT" while the pic of the goggles are sitting in full daylight.

Still seems like a steal to own one o the top 5 pumps ever made. I bet it shoots so far.

Oh I forgot to mention, those photos are in order, so that first one is the display photo for the ad.

Yeah like, I'm not saying I'm a night vision expert but I've certainly not heard of a vision system that is so sensitive to daylight that it can't see sunlight

To be fair, that does look like a photo at night with a flash. So apparently that's ok for the system, just not other forms of light

Also, is it infrared or night vision? Those are two different things

I'm wondering if his "night vision" is just the giant mag light on top. "Let's you see at night!" After all.

What's going on with the air system for the marker? I see a remote into a dummy cartridge but then it looks like the remote line itself is wrapped in tape

This is affectionately called "Sun Blem" or "Sun Blemish" it was a common issue with early active IR intensifiers they were sensitive to damage from excess light exposure even when turned off. Even worse was exposing them to sunlight while turned on which will destroy the intensifiers. I used to work on early nigh vision and FLIR equipment in my Navy days as an electronic failure analysis instructor/technician.

I wonder if the mag light has an infrared lense in it

The remote goes into a 3.5 or 4 oz CO2 tank taped to the stock 👍

"a bit" steep for an OC Nelson with a maglight bolted on top ...

They look like battery holders but missing the caps or something. The post mentions batteries can be custom made but I wasn't sure where he was going with that

ooohhh, for long night games, to keep the mag light working. I can see why this is one of the top 5 pumps, he's thought of everything.

He is responsive on facebook, so you're all welcome to ask more questions, or even invite him here...but be polite.

He put out a comprehensive list of all paintball media items and told me that he owns every single one of them. He estimates he has over 10,000 issues plus extras. I inquired more about how it is stored/displayed and this was his answer

I got curious about this night vision and these are either a really really good replica, or they're the real thing that he is selling, Even the box for them looks the same. They're used for driving at night with an infrared light source, which I think explains the flashlight. Sounds like they're from the 80's or earlier.

I can't link the images to it for some reason, but it's a 100% match.

He's trying to sell his collection. Other than paintball stuff he has military things, too. This guy would be really interesting to go visit I think.
He also says he has 80's and 90s T-shirts he want to sell as well.

He also says he's in direct contact Painthappy and baccipaintball ....interesting.

Looks like a "legit" very early setup for playing night games back in the late 80s early 90s. I setup a cobbled together Russian 1x monocle Gen 1 setup for my F1 back when Wayne Dollack started his scenarios and Thumper (teammate) had a real Gen 2 low magnification scope on "Stimpy" (an early Sniper II) that was used pretty often for a while. There was a team IIRC the "Marshalls" out of MD that had a whole crew using various night vision at scenarios during the 90s that were cobbled together from various sources because good US Gen 2/3 were just way too expensive.

In paintball eye relief was always the problem, out damn goggles got in the way. I have seen mask mounted like in the pictures above and that was "okay" we had a lot less worry about liability back then. Modified goggles was normal, I used JT Whipper Snappers with shaved foam at night with my monocle to get my eye closer to the correct eye relief.

I have to say, I've seen that top pic before. I want to say it was in the PB2X issue of "50 moments that changed paintball" from around 02-05. I may have to see if I still have that laying around somewhere.
