But either option tends to turn a "there's a nifty gun I want to try" into a fairly hefty project build.

My personal Viking, 04 with eyes and WAS board, has only one firing mode since it came out right at the peak of the ROF wars, unlimited semi. There's no way to set a max ROF on that particular board with the eyes on, unless you have the now super rare data cable, and a copy of the software, and the latest update for the board, and a computer with a serial port.
Since a number of my local field have rather definite ROF limits my favorite gun can almost never be used. Unless maybe I under hopper it with a revi or something.
I want to say even the early WAS software levels you could set rate of fire, but could be wrong.

however pandora boards were fully programmable and can be had for cheap.. as well as the morlock as previously mentioned (as long as you don't mind wiring it up)

I have wired Morlock boards in a few of my markers. They’re great.1 Photo

With the WAS board it depends on if/when they were last updated. My Viking, and I'm the only person to own it, was bought quite early in the 04 run, as soon as it was offered in green. At the time "PSP mode" didn't even exist. At some point I could have gotten my board updated with the new modes, but since the local league still used uncapped semi as the official mode I didn't feel the need too (still don't care for ramping even today). It wasn't until years later the local rec fields started implementing ROF caps, but by that point I didn't know anyone with the link cable and couldn't download the board update anyways. The last time my board saw a link cable we upped the "eye off" ROF from 13 to 15 I think.
