The field I worked at in the 90s used pro-lites with siphons. It was great. Never a single hot gun. Worked all winter with no issue. Sometimes they might chop a ball, so we would "dunk in the tank", and hit with some comrpessed air. Problem solved.
At some point as the prolite fleet was getting old, they switched to pirahnas. Nice guns, but not nice rental guns. And no siphons, so hot guns and cold weather issues. A paint to keep clean, etc.
Old Piranha STBB mechanical semis are better than 98s if only because you can pull out the bolt and hammer assembly, clean it, oil it, and slide it all back into the marker in about 2min.
Plus they’re simple and durable.
I reffed at a field that used them for rentals and they took a stunning amount of abuse.

Grills for $40 anyone?
They have a few colors and more at around $50
The "ref" version is even cheaper at $30

If you're headed to a field, I agree - Spectras and Spyders. I've never found a stock Spyder to have any issue worse than a dirty bolt or bad hammer o-ring, and I've gone down some Spyder rabbit holes but will still willingly play with a stock Sonix or Victory.
If you're going outlaw, there's a guy here who has a crate full of pumps and 12g changers, and we all show up, hand him lunch money, and he passes out guns, paint, and gas. Best paintball since that time I went to Splatttt's. Hammers and Trracers can be had for $50 or less, just like a Spyder, but then you're not dealing with air fills if you're in someone's back yard.
In my area there’s not that many Spyders, more Tippmanns and BTs. Can usually. Pickup a cheap BT for about $50 or less. They are basically an A5 without a cyclone. Generally only the ball detent needs to be replaced. You can run Tippmanns/BTs for pretty cheap, all run Tippmann detents so buy a bag and you’re good to go.
i remember reading some guide a long time ago about how most folks buy their gun first. they cheap out on the rest of the gear and end up hating playing
the recommended path was
-thermal lens mask first
-electronic hopper to use on rental marker
-entry level marker or whatever you can find second hand
-borrow HPA tanks from the field for long as possible
personally, nowadays i would try my hardest to just sway new players towards pump and stock class.
its great playing every weekend with a box of carts from walmart and a single bag of paint for the month
So get good masks first, just as others have said but to answer your question about a marker well there is some information that would help to fully provide some advice:
How many people are you thinking about supporting with your loaners?
What type of budget do you have?
What markers are you comfortable with maintaining.
Regardless, for loaners I recommend you get all the same functionally (marker type if not brand) so they all take the same teching/troubleshooting and parts/spare parts. Tippman 98s can be had for cheap but might take some money/time to get them all up and running. There is a reason they were used as rental fleets for a long time. Basic maintenance, and a few consumables and you can keep them up and running pretty easily without a lot of cost. Been a while since they have been produced and I have not maintained a fleet of them in over 10 years but I assume parts are still readily available as well as consumables. It takes a lot to destroy a 98 but it can be done so be aware. That all being said a fleet of Spyders could easily serve if you are knowledgeable on keeping them up and running. I actually had part of a rental fleet made up of Bruisers and they lasted a long time. What really matters is your budget, your ability to maintain a fleet and how committed you are to having a loaner fleet.
I have been thinking about keeping several "back-up/loaners" for some outlaw play in my area and I have been seriously considering EMEK markers basically because they just work with very little maintenance and they are actually pretty good playing markers as well. They are pretty cheap for what they are and I see them for sale in all sorts of places. They would be a more expensive marker then one of the older ones but they are more modern, super reliable and competitive with pretty much anything out there. So more expensive up front but I think less cost/hassle in the long run.

I did some rec ball years ago sold off all my stuff and now i want to get back into it casually.
Was able to get my friends to agree to hit the field some time next month once weather cools down in houston.it will be about 20 of us.
Hoping they enjoy it as much as i did.
Ive made note of the JT spectra and grill masks. Are there any other recommendations in that price range?
Im also curious about budget/used mechanical markers that arent tippman or spyder. Might have to look into the Gog enmey any other recommendations?
In case my friends want to get into it alittle more but not drop alot of money the first year.
I like to mod stuff so im thinking of looking for a cheap WGP Autococker to tinker and have fun with. Well as cheap as i can find one since prices are kinda high these days. Really wish i picked up acouple during my 10 years away from it.
Probably wont have one bought and up/running by the meet next month. But none the less im on the hunt for one.
