I think the SS-25s are more often available in the range that I would prefer to spend. Do those generally share the same characteristics many of you have highlighted in this thread?

Yes they have the older aluminum valve the newer ones are brass but performance wise they shoot great. Few things like brass rollers on the newer triggers. But function wise they are very good shooters.

What is a fair price on one? Just an average example

Yes and no. Quality will be the same but Older SS-25s might have older style autotrigger/frames which don’t have the captured autotrigger cam and will use a screw on the pump arm

After further research, how common are SS-23s?

The SS-25 is one of, if not the only, 11/16" valve guns. So that's cool.
