    Paintballs that I hated

I was just thinking the other day about paintball brands that I really disliked over the years. and since I fear that if we don't talk about it, the memory will all be forgotten.

5- Red paint. We all know the story- Red paint was banned because it was too easily masked blood. What some players might not know was this was also the pre-chrono days. People would routinely shim the springs to have guns shoot 400+, to have a range advantage over other players. I remember one particular game, where I was the front of the freight train, and was stitched all to holy hell by some very hot guns. I had scars for years. Whenever I think of red paint, I think of those pre-chrono days

4- Iodine Paint. I missed out on the oil paint early 80s, but the late 80s had lots of iodine based paint, and it stained the hell out of your clothes. Not just clothes, but just about everything you shot at ended up getting stained. I ended up wearing all black to hide all those strains. and I remember buying MC hammer black parachute pants. I was such a newb.

3- RP Scherer Supershell/Stingers. I remember in the early 90s, everyone complained that blowbacks were hard on paint, so RP came out with "super shell", which was an extra thick shell that wouldnt break in the gun.... and rarely on players either. It caused horrific welts, so it sucked to use it, or get hit by it. We learned to aim for masks. lol. There was also a rebranded version called Stingers... which for liability reasons, seemed like a poor name.

2- Zap anti-wipe paint. I know cheating is a huge problem in paintball. I reffed a lot in the 90s, and it would just ruin my day to have to do a 3-for-1 penalty. So around 95, Zap came out with an anti-wipe paint. It had a wax fill that just smeared around if you tried to wipe it. Lots of players would scotchguard the jersey, so it would just wipe off anyway, but what sucked was for a tournament, that meant players started the games with all previous hits. I had to carry about with me a clipboard, showing for each player where all his previous hits were, so not to confuse with new hits, and a potential "playing on" penalty, which could be 1-for-1 or 2-for-1. It was just a nightmare.

1- Cal Magnum Metallic. CalMag was never a good paint, but it was the field-paint for many, many fields. It was so bad that players would often put the paint in rock tumblers, or paintbrush spinners to make the paint better. But, we didnt know any better. In the magazines, they started advertising a new CalMag paint. The "metallics"., supposed to be the greatest paint ever to exist. We all begged the local field, so they ordered a pallet. The shell was clear, and the fill was clear, with metallic particles suspended. It looked pretty awesome. But I don't think anyone at CalMag actually tested this paint in a game because when you hit someone, it was basically invisible because of the clear fill. It made it completely impossible to play paintball. The field owner was pissed, and tried to return the pallet to the wholesaler, who was getting flooded with return requests. CalMag went out of business shortly after.

What are some other paints that people hated?

Pink fill PMI Premium? Premier? That was the one that stained bad, right? I got Valken Graffiti at a event once, and the fill had congealed quite a bit inside the ball. Outside, it would instantly cake up into a thick soild.

Lots of pink fill stains orange. It’s great for 10man woods events because it stands out super bright so the reff can see it. I have permanently dyed a good amount of gear getting pink paint on them at events like ICC. We ran NXL yellow one year and I blasted this guy to pieces the ref was right on top of him. But had a yellow lens. He couldn’t even see it right in front of him with the lens he had. Next year we shot pink.

The other Cal Mag you forgot was Black Beauty. A black shell with a fluorescent fill. The idea being the target couldn't see where the shot came from, and his buddies therefore return fire.

The problem was that worked both ways- the shooter often couldn't see the ball in flight either. Some of the last Cal Mag we had was BB, and everybody hated it- you couldn't tell where you where shooting, and adjust your aim.

As a one-off issue, we got some cases of Cal Mag in before that, that had either "sweated" or been improperly made, because half of any given box had nipples. No, not dimples, a nipple. Some were big enough it wouldn't even feed, and any ball with one was guaranteed to corkscrew off to oblivion worse than a wet barrel. We had to pick out the bad ones, often ditching a third to half of each box- which to those of us who had to pool money and mail order a case, was a pretty crappy situation.

In the brief while I ran a small field, somebody brought a case of blood-red SuperBall, and we, as refs and owners, spent the entire day dreading the player walking off with a huge "bloody wound", or spotting a blood-soaked sock, or seeing blood dropping down a face. We politely and firmly asked him not to bring that stuff again.

And yeah, I had some navy-blue Nelson years and years ago, and the birch trees shot with it showed a blue stain for more than a decade.

Boston Paintball indoor shot white shell white fill had white walls, white bunkers, and white nets. You couldn’t see the paint coming or going. They did it for easy clean up. But the pump events we played there you had to get close. It was really hard to snap battle. It played so different never realized how much I really on paint coming in for field awareness till I played at BP.

All American Paintball Park (RIP) used white shell/white fill paint. Thankfully the bunkers and everything else was standard airball colors so it wasnt bad. Damn do i miss that field, probably one of the worst tragedies of SP going under.

Old school RPS Polar Ice from ages ago. Growing up in Canada, we played a lot in the winter and this was the only stuff you could use at most fields. It had a distinct terrible smell and despite the marketing, they froze as solid as any other paintball and hurt like hell. Probably unfair to say it was worse because at those temps any paint would be frozen, but when it's all you use in cold weather, you learn to hate it.

I remember buying the all star paint on recommendation from the store owner. Absolute poo. It wouldn't run in any of our guns including a phantom. Oh and zap paint was cocky too.

All Star use to shoot money back in the day. So did Marbleizer. They ran both those paint brands into the ground playing on the name.

Marbleizer was my favorite green and black

Joker. My friend and local storeowner bought one pallet of it. It shot great, but it was hard as a rock. If it did break, the shell would slice up any exposed skin. I've got a picture somewhere of a kid's neck all cut up. We used it for about 3-4 games before we realized everybody was in pain. My friend gave everybody a refund, made sure to collect all the paint back, and sent it back to whatever company made it. I've never seen or heard of it since.

I remember stinger, and zap..... both shot like doodoo, with zap very slightly more accurate...... marblier was worlds ahead in consistency, and seemed to break no more than others in gun, but much better on the target........ marbs were dang consistent also......

Geeze... pretty much anything I could afford to play with when I started out in my early teens lol. Brass Eagle garbage was a go to paint in my outlaw group at that time. There was one guy in our group that would always roll up with a big plastic bucket of Zap, or Monster Balls, or whatever, bragging about how cheap it was at Walmart. I'm convinced those things were repackaged riot rounds.

Monsterballl - it was rubbery, hurt like hell, waxy fill that messed up everything it got broken in or on.....and was EVERYWHERE in the 2010's big box Paintball era

Inertia Pro - it was a fairly high quality great shooting paint problem being I generally had it shot at me! It was a violently neon orange crazy thick fill and stained even black gear!

Severe Paint emr used they had glitter in the fill - while it shot great it also scratched the hell out of lenses and even the spray from playing Castle conquest would leave you with glittery boogers for days after being around it.

                    And finally.

GAP dynasty paint banana scent. All the cool.kids shot it at our indoor byop games. That much of it was so overwhelming banana scent it made you want to puke

Big Balls was the funniest, but was semi terrible
