Ultimate Rental Gun?

This is all hypothetical. Just want to see what other people think, and what features they value. Can do both modern and vintage rentals (back when pumps would have been reasonable for renters to use).

Today, I think it would be either a BT4 or a stbb with a quick removable bolt. BT4 because it's a standard overgassed Tippmann 98, with consolidated internals, and slightly quicker stripping. A STBB, because orings are standard, and there are minimal critical seals for it to function, and the bolt and hammer can be removed quickly for cleaning, maintenance, and storage.

Mid 90s and back, I'd say really any Nelson pump just for the fact it has 3 critical seals, included the tank oring.

Features I'd look for would be reliability (obviously) and parts standardization (as many identical orings as possible, no proprietary seals).

What are your thoughts?

Hands down the Tippmann Pro/Carbine. Same bullet proof internals as the 98C but easier to clean and field strip. Run it on Co2 or HPA it don’t care. In my opinion one of the best blowbacks ever made and one of tippmanns best. Wish they still in production.

The gmek is essentially the new gold standard for rental markers. The problem with the tippman markers is that they take forever to clean/take apart. Rental players are dumb and they do things that require constant maintenance.

My requirements for a rental marker include to not just only reliability, but also ease of maintenance and cleaning. The tippman chronons isn't bad, either.

How are the rental emeks doing? They treating the field owners well? Ive heard the gog enemy is probably the most complex. Id say a clamshell tippmann a5 though personally, hate putting then back together since i always knock stuff out of place. Grrrrr XD

OSG in NH has been fielding Emeks for several years now. Some of them have millions on the shot counter, so to speak. O rings and grease. Players don't experience malfunctions during game play. ROF is close or similar to what everyone is using for walk on play. Almost all the regulars have purchased one. It's a fields dream rental.

Same results from my local field. Kids beat the hell out of em, if they have issues with them I haven’t seen it. Mine has tons of cases on it. I clean the valve every now and again it’s 2 screws and you push a few brass pins out wipe it clean grease and throw it back together it’s good to go for another 50 cases or so.

I forgot all about the pro/carbine series. That could very well do it. My only concern for using it today would be parts availability. If Tippmann were to rerelease it today with a 98 valve, hammer and bolt I think it would definitely be a contender. Unfortunately Tippmann and milling machines haven't been friends for a while now.

The Emek seems unnecessarily expensive for a rental to me. I don't like the proprietary seals for the switch and reg, or the number of seals in general. To me, the renter and field don't really get enough extra out of it in order to justify the cost. I do think the low force bolt is a good feature though.

The A5 isn't the worst. I think the cyclone feed is needlessly complicated for a rental though, along with some other fiddly bits. The stock valve would also need to have retaining ring swapped out for a c clip before rental fleet use imo.

You nailed it, try finding a connecting arm for them. You can't

They are a different length then the 98 so I had to take a 98 one, bend and cut it to create one for a pro carbine I had.

Think you won't lose them? Remember, they are held in by nothing more than the plastic snap on rear sight, which was also missing on the one I had

emek I think, I love 98s, but they're a nightmare to work on. I know OSG and AG paintball absolutely love their emek fleets.

Not just the fields. I love playing there. Rentals get a thermal lense mask and a emek. They get a similar experience to gear owners every time they play there. it's better walk on play when the brand new players aren't constantly bringing the old battle ax back to the shed to get a new one.

Emek, Emek, and emek again.

They are more expensive than 98s or some STBB, but my gosh they are so much better than either of them. They really are worth the extra price. My local store has been running their emeks harder than any other rental we've had, with much less maintenance than any other rental we've had, and they just keep going. The number of o-rings would be a concern, if you ever had to actually do anything with them. Our fleet is probably 2 years old now, and I don't think any of them have even been taken apart and regreased. And they break paint so rarely that 99% of time, all you have to do is wipe off the outside.

With STBBs, you're replacing o-rings aaaaalll the time. Same with springs, detents, etc. They're by far the worst rental platform. They're easy to work on, but you spend so much time actually working on them that it doesn't pay off.

Tippmanns are better but obviously much harder to work on. They break paint quite a bit more, and more prone to gunk buildups than either of the other 2. Most of the time, any repair is just cleaning them out, but they take so long to take apart that it just becomes annoying.

Emeks are a great blend of the 2. They're similar if not more durable than a 98 (definitely more durable than the old ones) and much easier to work on. Also lighter, quieter, and more efficient than any other option on the market. There's a reason most fields are going that direction.

Emek hands down best thing since the A5. A new player can walk on the field for the first time and not be out gunned. Lots of fields are switching to Emek for rentals and it’s great for new players. Some fields like OSG and AG are running thermal lens masks with rental packages. I bet they pay for themselves just in paint it’s so low maintenance and they are way less finicky on paint.

expanding on the emek as likely the best rental platform out yet, the story only gets better once you add a PAL , or even the new Speedster .... imagine a day renting with not a single broken ball!?? That makes a renter feel like a gun owner for sure..... Now if we only could figure out the Rental Mask problems!!!!!

That problem has been solved. Fields just have to spend the money on better equipment!

Agreed ! A fogged up mask makes for a poor time! If they like repeat business, they should outfit renters with masks that don't fog

I've yet to seen a truly bad choice for a rental gun and even the 98 soldiers on as a great rental gun. But the barrels! It's not that the guns are bad it's that the renters can't hit anything because there's 1/8" of sludge in the barrel. That IMO is the real issue with rental guns is the level of maintenance they receive and how that ruins the experience for a lot of newbies.

I played with a rental Emek once. Had the PAL system and it functioned better than a shake n shoot 98. I was pleasantly surprised with no breaks, a good RoF and how smooth it was. The loader would need an occasional bump, but no chops or jams. Nothing felt loose either and the trigger didn’t stick or bind. I’m glad some fields are offering them as a rental. Was the reason I decided to keep my Etha 2, to have a good backup.
