They are using some specially made paintball filled with pheromone that will reduce by 70-80% the reproduction of caterpillars that are harmfull for the trees. This biocontrol method have been tested since 2017 and now they have the approval to go on a broader scale.
They have people shooting paintball at the top of tall pine trees that are infested to control the population of those parasite and they say the pheromone will be effective for 3 months once applied.

Those caterpillar are a real problem, specially in southern France.
they make nests up high in the pine trees and then drop the ground. Doesn't sound too bad until you realize they are covered in "fur" like needles that are poisonous ...
Also, they can eat all the pines and kill the trees ...

Current control method are cut the top of the tree or spray pesticide from planes ... This could really be a game changer ...

I hope this will work much better than tape around the tree trunk and smashing the caterpillars with a shovel (I got caterpillar guts in my eye).
