Significantly less - at least in my experience. This is the rationale I have always accepted for why we had shorter barrel backs. When the bore length exceeds ~5x the cutter diameter it becomes very difficult to machine with similar precision and finish. The original Freak inserts were already flirting with a 7.5x L/D ratio which can be achieved with some expensive spade-type gun drills on regular lathes. At 8.5"/0.677" they're at 12.6x. I suspect that, for production needs, they're paying a premium over normal machining services for a shop that has gundrilling equipment to bore+ream these down from a nominal 0.75" ID extruded tube. Maybe the quantities justified a custom extrusion at .71"...

In comparing price points, the SS freak kit seems to still be available for $130. Subtracting $30 for the case, that's $12.50 per insert - compared to $35 per Dye 8.5" insert, making them ~3x more expensive. Make no mistake, though. I'm thrilled that they're doing it. In a world of $1k guns we can certainly afford a $300 barrel kit. And I especially appreciate industry standardization.

When so many pb companies are making proprietary parts & seals it’s nice to see some standardization.

no one is building these barrels on normal lathes. even short backs.

I'm just glad everybody is jumping on board with 8" control bores. Until my Gmek purchase in recent years, I was a die hard TK Automag cultist since like 1999 or 2000. I remember Tom writing about proving 8" control bores to be the most efficient.

Now, we have others actually verifying his evidence, and mass market adoption. +1 for TK.

Way before these came out, I jumped on the Freak XL bandwagon simply because of the 8" principle. Lol

Still waiting for my Dye inserts since they allowed people to buy them. Was this just a paper launch or something?

If you email them they will ship out what is in stock. I got a .688 and .604 from ANS in august I think and then ordered the back and more inserts from Dye. They shipped me the back and .680 on my request a few weeks ago. the 0.676 they said they had ins tock and were waiting on .692 that is supposed to be in some time in November (they told me 30 days out on 10/16).
