    MCB Upgrade News

    Hi all,

Almost two years ago, as most of us recall, mcarterbrown.com suffered a disastrous ransomware attack. We lost years of valuable "hive-mind" knowledge as well as photos, and stories, etc. It was awful. In haste to get the forum back up and running Carter and I scrambled to get MCB running quickly. We rushed through some back-end decisions and said "Let's deal with that later." Well, nearly two years has gone by and we haven't tackled those things. Therefore, the time is now to do it. The forum has to come down for a few hours for maintenance. Some of it is database maintenance and some of it is Linux operating system maintenance. The question is when to do it. I'm not keen on middle of the night ops (US Eastern) as, frankly, I'm apt to fall asleep at the keyboard or more likely to make mistakes from being groggy. I'd like to perform the upgrades this coming Saturday morning. I get that for some people that's a preferred login time but it works best for me.

The good news is that, although we lament all the lost memories and information, the new MCB forum is much, much less likely to ever suffer that fate (never say never) due to the backup and recovery system in place. Yes, in the past few months we had power grid outages which was a headache but the server and data is very secure.

So, unless there's some incredibly important reason why Saturday 4/30 around 8 AM EDT is a bad time to kick off the upgrade and maintenance, call it a date! I'll cross post this on the Facebook MCB page.

Sounds like a good time to do it! I'm sure we'll get messages on FB and other outlets that the hackers are back at it again, so it doesn't really matter what time you do it, other than when you plan on being at peak performance to do this efficiently!

I'm all for any reason to postpone the selling of sweet paintball stuff until I am awake, so perfect choice of the time of day.

Saturday daytime is usually a less traffic'ed time on MCB. I think it's a fine time for maintenance.

On a side note... Will this latest maintenance/upgrade session revive vintagerex and paintballcity? Or is that a totally separate problem/issue?

Totally separate in that I just don't have that data. If Carter has a backup of Vintagerex I'd be very happy to resurrect it. I'll ask him. Paintballcity too. Not a big deal. All I need are the files which he might have tucked away somewhere.
