Yes they should be threaded between the stainless and aluminum tip. Haven't tried getting them apart though.

Does the DW XL tip serve to convert a traditional freak back into being usable with XL inserts or am I being too hopeful?

It won’t work with the older backs. Only the newer style like the freak xl barrel I also have listed.
