What is the knurled knob on the back of the bolt for? .

It looks like its holding the pump rod into the bolt.

originally they have a setscrew to hold the pump rod in place, im suspecting that setscrew got lost an replace with whatever was available

Xemon got it right. It was a pump arm screw from a Kenimex Blackhawk
