anyone want some old coins?

While cleaning out my safe today (because covid), I found some old coins that I forgot I had. I got them from my uncle's estate after he passed a few years ago. Apparently he remembered how I thought they were cool back when I was five years old, so he left them to me, even though I'm a big boy now and my interests have changed. But whatever. It was nice that he thought of me at all.

Anyway, I don't think there's anything rare in his collection. He just had a whole bunch of proof sets in little boxes from the Philadelphia mint, ranging from 1979-1986. He also had a few "uncirculated" sets from 1985 and 1984. There are nine sets in all.

• 1979 set (no box, so I'm unsure if it's "uncirculated" or a "proof" set
• 1980 proof set in a box with a case
• 1981 proof set in a box with a case
• 1982 proof set in a box with a case
• 1983 proof set in a box with a case
• 1984 proof set in a box with a case
• set of uncirculated coins from 1984 in plastic sleeves, no box
• 1985 proof set in a box with a case
• set of uncirculated coins from 1985 in plastic sleeves, no bx
• 1986 proof set in a box with a case

I've got no idea what these are worth, but if I have to post a price.....$100 shipped? IDK. Like I said, I'm pretty sure these aren't rare. Just an interesting collection for someone who likes that kind of stuff.

I feel your pain.

One of my relatives was an avid collector of things that WERE worth a lot of money, but obscure and easy not to recognize to the uninitiated. I got a box of loose coins, and a notebook with coins inside sleeves with cryptic writing on them. I took them to a coin specialist and was personally overwhelmed by his reaction, as in spidey sense going off. He acted completely disinterested as he looked through and instantly made a comments about "well, I can take them off your hands if you want but...".

Without knowing, it's hard to know.

I used to love coin collecting back in the early 80s.
I got a bit obsessed when the price of silver spiked, and I'd go to the bank, "buy" $100 worth of quarters, take them home and look for the silver ones, rewrap the others and sell back to the bank.
To a lesser extent, I'd do this with dimes, and half dollars as well.

Then the price of silver tanked.... right about the time silver quarters were thinning out of circulation. and I totally lost interest. But I still have a ton of silver in storage somewhere. I thought about selling once the value came up 8 years back, but.... nah. I might as well save it for the apocalypse.
