Homemade Portable AC

I am not sure if this invention is a known thing, but I was chatting with a friend about Slim's game this weekend and how it could hit 100 degrees. We started talking about ways to cool down a tent at night. After chatting we came up with a really simple DIY air conditioner.

My old work place was a laboratory that gets tons of Styrofoam coolers and they just dispose of them. So I stopped by and grabbed one. I punctured four holes at the bottom with a freak insert, then cut the top to fit my rechargeable belt fan. I then filled it with frozen water bottles (loose ice would create too much water and make a mess).

It actually blows out colder air than my window air conditioner at my house.

The fan even has a night light in case I get scared!

I may have to get a styrofoam cooler to make one for myself. I have a small battery powered fan that would work well for this

This works better than those mini swamp coolers you see, those lose efficiency fast as it gets more humid.

That's awesome. I'm going to go make one now. I like the frozen water bottles since I usually bring a few with me anyways for my cooler.

I think the best part might be when I wake up at midnight and pop open the cooler to grab a swig of freshly melted ice water! Nothing better than that!

How long do you think the fan battery lasts for?

The fan claims to last for 13.5 hours on a full charge. I have a back up battery bank and a booster for my car that charges via USB. So I know I am covered. My biggest concern is if the fan burns out or something. Then I am in trouble!

Well forget all about it, my youngest son's daycare shut down cuz a covid so I had to watch him while I worked on Friday, long story short my oldest stayed home too. I put a show on for him jumped on my computer half hour later I come back and the cooler is completely destroyed. They wanted to build a fort, and use the cooler as the base and fell on it and destroyed it. I'm getting a hotel for the night for slims.

Ok no! That sucks but at least they had fun with it

I'm contemplating making one it of my rolling Coleman cooler. I think it would be durable and I can roll it out to the shed or field for my tent. I might make the top hole fit the entire fan but the bottom of it just enough to pull the cold air out. One hole in the lower half to help circulation.

Around here, a foam cooler is about $4 at the grocery store. All may not be lost!

It's an awesome idea. I'm gonna keep it in mind for some car camping here in Texas.
