    Tippmann 98 Project Question

I recently picked a Custom 98 for a couple bucks and I'm planning on doing some work to it.

I want to know if i use a High Pressure regulator thru a vertical adapter, will the marker be capable of recharging enough to shoot more than a couple balls a second without an expansion chamber/volumizer? I've seen photos of most upgraded 98's (using a HPR) with that expansion chamber/ volumizer installed in front of the trigger guard where the original air line feeds into the body. I have looked all over and cant find that part available anywhere. Is this upgrade necessary to keep up the recharge in between shots? I plan on keeping the marker mechanical but with trigger upgrades/hairpin and different springs i should be able to achieve my goal of 7-10 bps.

Also i am not seeing any available Low Pressure Kits for Sale. Is this because we all use HPA now and not c02?

Lp kits were more of a marketing gimmick than anything. They tended to cause more problems than they were worth because the markers were never designed to run on low pressure

If you want to run a regulator I don't see a huge problem hitting 7-10 bps. The real problem is running the regulator below your tank output pressure but above the low point that the marker needs to recock.

You may also want to consider a rear velocity adjuster (rva) that way you can run a slightly higher pressure through the regulator to help with recocking but less spring pressure to control velocity. This will also completely eliminate the need for the stock velocity adjustor (put a small screw in it's place to just block off the hole)

I'd have to imagine those who run regs on a Tippmann without adding volume are still running the regs pretty high (maybe 6-700 psi). That's on the borderline of keeping it functional, so I imagine if you do get quick on the trigger shoot down is possible. Volume is very important when lowering pressure on Tippmanns. Buying a full LP kit is your best bet if you own a 98. If you can't do that then an expansion chamber/gas through grip directly off the valve fed by a bottomline reg should work. You'll also need to mess with springing, hammer weight and some mods to the valve itself. I tried to LP another 98 based gun and had to do homebrew and it was pretty frustrating (I've given up for the time being). If you have any questions feel free to message me.

I've worked on a lot of Tippmanns, IMO swap out the valve spring, polish the internals (or at least remove the factory overspray) add an RVA and rear spring kit, and then drill out the 1/8" Npt fitting that goes into the valve on the VASA. That should do it. It'll still need highish operating pressure (600/700 psi) but the drilled out VASA & line should add enough volume to be able to lower the pressure somewhat. Full LP kits are expensive and aren't really worth it for anything other then an ebolt IMO.
